WPP winners 2010

The shocking and heartbreaking portrait of Bibi Aisha is a worthy winner as is the equally heartbreaking one of the young Vietnamese girl with birth defects caused by Agent Orange. Not getting much out the swans image or the fashion one in Milan myself although the Pakistan floods image and the Bangkok image are very powerful. I also really like the social networking girl portrait.

Thank you, Clive. My own taste in these follows yours. I liked them all, except for the couple that you were indifferent to. My top overall pick would perhaps have been the Bangkok riots picture, for its startling extraction of art from reportage. Very durable photograph, that one.

Thanks for the link, Clive.
My favorite, from my first reaction, is the Pakistan food drop. Such beauty in disaster.
I also thought the Social Networking Self Portrait made a strong statement.
Overall, a great collection.

I thought the one of the Bangkok Riot was the best. They were all good, of course. The little girl with the birth defects and the first picture are heartbreaking.

Yes, Clive, I am similarly impressed: the two portraits confer a stunning dignity.

Reminded me of zeuszen's essay on art and depression (depression thread in rants) particularly:

"We [artists] can incite a riot within the heart, we can teach without lecturing, preach dissociation without preaching and kindle resentment towards evil...

"He [the artist] observes how dignity springs from humiliation and how anger and rage are properly put to use, use and use.

Agreed. Something Rapturous about that one at very first glance.

All the winners

BBCs selection from the winning photos is interesting - They have included some 2nd and 3rd place winners over the 1st place, and omitted some categories all together. Take a look at the whole set of winning pictures.

54th World Press Photo Contest. Another link to 23 good-sized winning images at Boston.com:

I'm curious about Photo #9, the winner of First Prize Sport Stories (Adam Pretty, Australia). It's unfair to judge without seeing the entire series, but this example seems odd to me.

Number 15 is easily my favourite shot. In every other photo of Kim Jong II, he looks mean and cold. This one shows the frail fearful side of the North Korean dictator/bully as he looks at his son whom clearly is angry with dad. Both look so miserable.
