Penny and I are expecting! That's right, EXPECTING! Delivery is projected for Monday Jan 24th at 11:00 AM EST.

She's being fairly phlegmatic about it, but I'm just bursting with impatience as we wait to welcome our new (gently-used) Canon 100-400mm f/4.-5.6L IS USM into our family of lenses :-)

Ever since I got the 5D, I've been grievously lacking at the long end. Now the 70-200mm f/4L will go to live in her 7D bag, and I'll lug the big beast around.

But boy, howdy, we just realized that's over 600mm equivalent on the 7D... Time to shoot some birds, eh, what?

That's my sweetie's big lens. It's awesome. And yeah, you'd better have a sturdy tripod and renew your gym membership...

Moose, my friend, and bear, maybe herons and condors in flight, if you don't spook 'em off. You'll need a 500mm or 600mm for wrens.

We both have beefy Manfrotto tripods, we're good to go that way. As for the wrens, well THOSE come to the feeder :-)

Hey, enjoy. I find it a very versatile lens, actually, for all kinds of purposes.

For a 100-400 lens? That thing is incredibly light and has IS. It shouldn't even have a tripod mount!

3.5 lbs is "incredibly light"? I wish I had your guns, but I'm an old man :-)

Agreed. No idea why they put a tripod ring on that thing by default.

I love the lens, really, really love it, but I do wish it was faster. Oh why does it have to be a 4.5-5.6... That lens in a f4 version would be GREAT...

It handles really well, I think you'll be surprised. :)

Besides you've been carrying that 70-200 can forever now, and it's not exactly a lightweight 50mm f/1.8 is it? ;)

I'll admit I'm not your typical photographer. I recently rented a 500MMF4IS and used a 1.4X on it and handheld it for a day shooting eagles. The group thought I was crazy. I typically handhold a 300MM F2.8 for hours while carrying a second body with a 70-200.

this is a photo taken of me on my eagle trip while walking down by the river. The tripod mount on it came in handy as a carrying handle. :D

I think this is the next lens I'm going to buy, but I feel I'll never get there. Enjoy!

I agree about the tripod thing. I got this lens in November and all my best shots have been handheld. I don't find it too heavy to work that way. I did have a 70-300mm IS (not the new L) and not only is this lens longer, but blows the 70-300mm out of the water in terms of quality.

I think you'll find it will exceed your expectations.

I absolutely love my 100-400 - and it really isn't too heavy, although my arm and shoulder ache rather after lugging it around a nature reserve for 8 hours or so... I often use it handheld - nearly all my bird and hare photography is, and the IS works brilliantly. I really only use a tripod when the light is low, like in the early morning shots of deer.

That, or with the lens resting on my shoulder, is how I always carry my camera when the 100-400 is mounted.

Congrats Robert. I'm sure you'll love it the new baby. Looking forward to see some images.

I hope you get as much pleasure out of that lens as I have mine. I agree with the others about the need (or not) of using a tripod with this lens. Low light is the only time I consider using a tripod. I will say that I've gotten used to having the tripod mount on the lens as it gives you just a bit more leverage when you're swinging that thing around fully extended.

I love my lens!! If I can hold it, anyone can. (I'm quite the wimp.) I never use a tripod, even when I can and should. I feel it's too limiting with wildlife, so I hand hold. After a day at chincoteague, my arm was getting pretty tired. I didn't particularly care, however.

But... It does get heavy to lug around on my back. It doesn't matter, though. It goes with me everywhere.

Go boil some water. :)

(Isn't that what guys are always told to do in these situations?)
