Hey, I can understand your being upset.
But remember that
a) On this site we are judging titled photos. In some places one judges just the image, but in many cases the title IS part of the finished work.
b) Whilst it must be increasingly frustrating for you to have comment after comment telling you about something you now know about, don't forget that each commenter has no idea what the previous have said.
c) I personally tend to try and ignore spelling errors as I know that for many members English is not their first language. That said, dictionaries are available on the internet and it doesn't take much effort to check spelling before entering a title. To my mind it shows added pride in one's work if one takes care not just when taking the image but when post-processing, when adding borders and when titling/ presenting it.

Nope no short fuse... and I do have kids.....
Anyway the point is... The comments are on mis-spelling.
Ok.. if that is the only thing the person has a comment about why is the score of the photo so low?????
If I am judged by a typo... than this is rediculous. This site should be shut down.
Yeah like I said. Photo Challenge... not spelling Bee. So its a typo... look at the damn picture. say more than... titles spelt wrong.. I mean come on people...
But do you ever think that maybe it was spelt wrong on perpuss????
well when you see the rest of my spelling and how bad it is probly not... but just think about it.

Sorry you feel that way, but the title is part of the entry, like it or not. Mis-spelled words in the title reflect negatively on the image unless it is obvious that the mis-spelling is done for effect. If the photographer doesn't care enough about their image to make sure the title is spelled correctly, why should I care about the image part of the entry?
FWIW, I don't comment on or correct people's spelling errors, but I do think it detracts from the overall entry.

Stop crying and move on. I went back to see if I saw the mispelling and actually found 2 pictures with mispelled titles. Proof your entry before submitting it, and that will eliminate those comments. |

I very much doubt that you are being judged purely on the typo in your title. I suspect that it plays a small part in your overall score alongside the content itself, the technical merits, how creative/ imaginative people find the entry, what they think of the border and whether it not it appeals more than other entries.
I very very much doubt people are actually looking at your entry, thinking it's great and would normally score a 7 but they're going to give it a 2 because there is a typo in the title.
I just don't think so.

I'm currious now, was it a typo or a spelling error? |

I would say if the score is so low, it is because the photo is not pleasing the majority of voters. Pain and simple.
Get a grip. Learn from your mistakes, spelling or otherwise.

dictionary.com is a great site. Find out if its spelled right before you enter.
Last night I used a word in my title of a photo I uploaded and put in there to see if it fit my photo. It didn't so I had to think of a new one. |

Wow, such language.
Here is a picture of mine that did very well considering my title was spelled wrong.
Should a photo be docked because the title is spelled wrong? NO!

Yeh, I have noticed in the past that one or two people are a bit picky about spelling etc. Some people get worked up when they see stuff like that, its sad but its just the way they are. I even noticed somebody picking somebody up for using incorrect English!
Jebus - help us all!
Ignore them and enjoy the site, dont waste your time trying to understand them -'for they know not what they do' .....

I went through about half the photos and found two misspellings. The first looks like a typo, but is just not a very good photo and will probably get a 4. The second is an OK photo, and the misspelling could be on purpose (but if it is I don't get the intention) but at any rate will be a 5 or maybe a 6 if I'm generous when I get to it. So if yours is the first photo, maybe it's just not very interesting, and the best thing anyone can come up with to comment on is the title. :( |

And to think that if you spelled it right, you may have received a ribbon on that one. ;-)

just like when I uploaded my image, and noticed that there were weird color problems because of jpg artifact...I went back and edited the photo to correct it. I do the same with the title and all of its info. recheck it at least twice. And if I am not sure of something ...I LOOK IT UP. if you don't have pride in your work...who will?
and I am aware of the many english as second language, so I would never drop a photos score based on a misspelled word. Usually I don't even care about the title.

I have worried with some of my entries that I posted at 8:59 (pacific time), when I don't have time to think about spelling in the frenzy of getting the other info on the submission page filled out. Fortunately, I don't think I've blown any yet... |

One of the most common complaints on this site is that people don't take long enough to look at a photo. If you can't even be bothered to spend 30 seconds to type/spell your title correctly for a photo that actually means something to you, why should I spend any time looking at it? It's all part of the package. If you hung your photo in a gallery, you wouldn't put it in a hideous frame, etc. |

Ah, but this isn't a gallery, is it? This is a timed contest. If I were ever fortunate enough to hang anything of mine in a gallery, I would certainly take the time to properly title and display them. I probably wouldn't even consider subitting something for display in a gallery that I was rushed to complete. But for a timed contest, sometimes that's not always an option.
Of course, I don't know if that came into play on this particular entry. Just calling for a little grace. Personally, I'd rather have someone spend the extra 10 minutes working on the photo and slip up on spelling the title while submitting, than have them feel forced to put less effort into the photo just so they have time to do a spell check on their title. Just a thought...

Of course, anyone who is so awfully rushed isn't required to submit. Everyone has their own preferences, if you're going to submit something for feedback, you're going to get it and possibly not like it. So it goes. |

I can't believe there's so much fuss about spelling on a photography site. I used to submit stuff to some writing sites and you wouldn't believe the bad spelling and grammar there. Some of the people put on work that seems only semi-literate and is barely readable. And that was with a built in spell-checker.
Interestingly the people whose home language wasn't English usually submitted stuff that was pretty close to perfect.
I usually reread everything before I press the post button, whether it's a forum post or a comment, but mistakes still creep through. But to go back to the original rant, why don't you take the comments as constructive - maybe people are just trying to help when they point out a spelling mistake.

If you can't see that misspelled words make you look ridiculous,
illiterate and undiscriminating, then why do you expect that
people will assess your photograph with any rigour?
I'm not talking about people who's first language isn't English.
But as a native English speaker, how can you expect not to
leave a negative impact with something as basic as a misspelled
title.
Would you turn up to a job interview looking a mess - and hope that
your potential employers had the vision and integrity to see the real
you? Of course not - wake up and step into the real world of judgemental
humans!
Moreover IMHO, a clean apt title can contribute to a photograph. |

I can understand you being upset that people are judging you on spelling. I'm a professional writer and I constantly make spelling mistakes (and accidentally made one on a submission a while back). woops. However, the intent of DPChallenge is to provide a community for people with a similar passion. I hope most people have the intent to be supportive. You may not have intended to sound like you were losing it (tone is very hard to convey in e-mail), but you may want to try a different approach in the forum postings. You can always get more bees with honey, or something like that. |

This was a typo... I summited one picture... And ended up like the way another one came out. So at the last minute I summited the new picture. The orginal title was totaly spelled correctly, and in a rush I fummbled my fingers.
But what gets me is the comments only on the spelling. I mean come on. if you don't have anything to say about the picture just don't say anything..
Ok so the title is part of the picture... but, can't you see past the typo. Don't you think that I had noticed ( too late).
anyways.. this is the Rant Forum... I am just Ranting about this. Plan and simple... Im not trying to start a great debate, or WWIII.
Nope,, all my pictures I submit suck. all have low low scores. I be lucky to score in the topp 300 out of 200 photos.
But hey, Let me rant. because out of 10 comments all 10 say something about the spelling, and only two say it coupld be a possible typo. and only one was truly helpfull. This person talked about the picture.
but hey. Who am I to say... except a lowly non-photo taking bad speller.
