It is sounding like these 40D's are money makers for Canon. I can only hope that I get at least another year out of this once it is returned.

Update! Just received my camera today from Canon. It works great! They replaced the shutter assy. and cleaned the Sensor and adjusted the focus. Yes it cost $212 but they replaced the shutter at no charge for the part. The labor was $180 plus tax plus shipping. Overall, if I have a new shutter then I feel pleased with the result.

Thx I hope that there aren't too many other 40D users out there with similar problems. It's really hard to determine if this is a problematic model or not. Time will tell. All told. I'm pretty happy with the result. 8 days from shipment to return.

Had the same failure on Christmas morning. Taking it to have it looked at tomorrow. Finger's crossed it doesn't cost me an arm and a leg, b/c lord knows I don't have the cash at the best of times, let alone right after Christmas.

Yip, they made money from me too, AND with less than 12,000 actuations I had to pay for parts too. Got rid of it as soon as I could. For me, personal opinion not looking for a fight, the 20D was a much much better camera than the 40D could ever dream to be. My brother is STILL using the 20D daily.

Just Google 40D and weep in your hands. In fact, if it was not for my big investment in Canon lenses, I would have gone to Nikon or even Sigma.

Oh, the 40D is not that bad. Remember I have a 40D that went swimming in a flash flood and while it's a bit quirky now functions flawlessly.

I've only had the 99 error in temperatures below -25C due to frost on the contacts. Once warmed up a touch and removed the frost, no more 99 error.

First thing to do is clean the contacts and check other lenses.

I too have encountered this "99 error" you speak of, googled it and cleaned my contacts... problem solved.

For those of you talking about the 5D MkII, be advised that they too can have problems. Mine encountered an "Error 20" problem which was cured once I sent the unit to Canon Canada who ended replacing the cam gear assembly, mirror box, which I understand is a whole bunch of parts.

Total repair costs: $292.67

Sometimes expensive toys break and you have to pay to fix them.
