I am going to be moving to China for a year in June and I'm looking for a bag that would be suitable to carry all of my photo equipment in it at once for ease of transportation. I'm going to need room for:
(1)Canon 10d with battery grip
(1)420EX flash
(1)1.4x teleconverter
(1)70-200L F4
(1)28-135 IS
(1)100mm f2.8
(1)50mm f1.8
(1)sigma 15-30 ex
(1)battery charger and cord
+some minimal space for compact flash cards/filters/etc

I'm looking at the Lowepro Mini Trekker but since I haven't seen it in person i don't know whether that will all fit. does anyone have any experience with these setups that could lend some advice?

I'd guesstimate that it will all fit. I have most of these or similar lenses and stuff so I'll try putting them all in my mini trekker and taking a shot either tonight or tomorrow.

The question is really do you want to carry it all around at the same time :)

Or put it another way, as several of those lenses cover the same focal lengths, could you leave them at home, lighten your load and cover the same bases equally well ?

The 100mm macro for example, while a fantastic lens, is quite heavy and large, and is well covered focal length wise by the 70-200. Potentially you could get a close-up lens or extension tube to let the 70-200 focus close in, take up a whole lot less space and get roughly the same quality 'macro' work. It wouldn't be as wonderful as the 100mm macro, but realistically how much macro work are you likely to do ?

The 28-135IS vs the 50mm 1.8 seems another place were you could take one or the other, as the 15-30, 50, and 70-200 cover the range pretty well, and the 50mm 1.8 might give you all the low light support that you need.

Alternatively, the 28-135IS might well replace the 50 and again get you low light/ slow shutter support.

Other random thoughts. The battery charger/ cord. Are you taking another one to charge batteries for your flash ? Is that going to fit in the bag too ?

Storage: Are you going to be burning CDs, or how do you plan on off loading the CF cards ?

I just recieved my Canon Backpack 200EG... I love it. I'd be worried about all your lenses fitting though.

EDIT: BTW I love it. The padding is great and the quality is very nice! I did end up re-arranging the layout inside though. I didn't like my camera at the top like they had it stock.

the main issue here is ease of tranporting the lenses overseas. this started off because two of my lenses, the 15-30, and the 100-400L are quite large and have their own carrying cases, so at this point i would be looking at carrying my small camcorder bag and two carrying cases. consequently i'm going to sell the 100-400 and trade down(in size) to get the 70-200, bag, converter, and other stuff that i need. so basically it's more a matter of being able to get everthing to fit so that i can bring it all over in one bag. once i get settled in there, i can interchange.

i like your suggestion of cutting out the 28-135 given the focal ranges of my lens setup.

i just bought a 17" laptop with a built in compact flash reader as well that I will be bringing over so i've been exploring options for laptop photo bags as well, if there are any in that range

Lowepro actually makes a laptop bag, Stealth AW II. According to the catalog it holds an Apple G4 notebook, 1 - 2 SLR bodies, 3.4 lenses, cell phone, file folders, change of clothes, toiletries and accessories.

Also, the Stealth Reporter 650 AW which also holds a laptop.

The Lowepro website would probably give you more info.

I use tihs promaster backpack. It is very large. I have carried 35 pounds of gear for hundreds of miles without trouble(besides my legs). You can get one for around $100us.

I like the fact that it doesn't say CANON on it. It would be more likely to be stolen. Cut the tags off or something if you get a canon.

I have the Lowepro Nature Trekker AW. It's one sturdy back pack, but beware: it weighs 5.5 pounds empty. The 5.5 pounds is worth it because of the padding it offers. I'll still be looking at the Mini Trekker because it's lighter + I don't feel like lugging all of my gear at once. The Mini Trekker is not as "thick" so I think I might have to lay down my Sigma 15-30mm on its side.

The Nature Trekker fits all my current gear nicely:

10D
Canon 70-200mm F4
Canon 28-135mm IS
Sigma 15-30mm
Sigma 105mm
Canon 1.4x Extender
Olympus 50mm F1.8
X Drive
Canon 550EX

Here it is stuffed with all of my main gear

I still has room for one more lense if I remove the flashsleeve and fold the 550EX.
