Hello,
I have the Trendnet TV-IP422W internet IP camera. It is wireless and can be accessed and moved around via a web browser. It is working well.
It has a plug for GPIO (General Purpose In/Out.
Basically...this plug will allow you to for example, turn on a lamp via the web browser. However, I can find any info on what adapter I would need for the lamp...not even from Trendnet.
Is this somekind of "generic" plug that I can pick up at radio shack that would simply switch on a power jack that the lamp is plugged into? I'm lost on this....
Anybody?
Thanks,
Kenny |

Hey Kenny,
Unless you want to start soldering, you'll likely have to wait for a little while.
Kudos to them for forward-thinking and including the interface, but nobody has really come up with a consumer application for GPIO yet.
There's a few GPIO-USB modules available (example), but they are really in the development stage.
I'm guessing someone will build an interface to x.10 - which will open up a world of home-automation applications.

Oooh, that sounds cool. I've had some of my x10 controllers since the late 80's - like this one sitting next to me right now.
Those types of practical interfaces seem VERY far behind where they should be. What happened to the automated house of the future and your PC talking to your fridge? And where the hell is my (affordable) jet car??? |

home automation is here. its just very, very expensive.
and jet cars? people cant even drive on the roads and you want them to be able to fly? that's one thing i'm glad we don't have.

Thanks for the info...this would be nice to have. The came (several of them) are on a property indoors facing the parking lot and lots. If I could somehow connect the outdoor floods or at least an indoor light I could flick them on when needed. I'm having a little trouble with kids and teens in the area !
Thanks again

EDIT - DUDE !!!! Believe it or not, this cam can be hooked up to a speaker that allows me to talk over the web to whoever is near the camera. I tried it and it works....I'd bet my D90 that if I hooked a clapper up to a light and clapped through the web it would work !!!!!!!!!
Do they sell these things a walmart...kmart..etc?
Before edit:---
Thanks but I tried this already. Every time I walk around the room my lights go on and off because my ass cheeks keep slapping together.

I did now. :-) I believe they sell the clapper at some dept stores or drug stores even and at the malls that have those "As seen on TV" stores. I'll be interested to hear how your convoluted plans work out. ;-) |

Kenny,
Sounds like you need to move to a better neighborhood and get out the ghetto...Usually when you need to set up a camera it's time to move!!! ;) |

Not sure about your reference. I'm just referring to growing up with the overpromising of technological advances as they relate to practical use in our everyday lives. I am impressed with lots of things, but still feel we should be closer to the Jetsons than we are. |
