I shoot for myself. I don't win ribbons that way, but I am happy with my photos.
It all depends on what you want...I personally want to further my passion(and career) and capture what makes me happy.

I think this is the first time I didn't do "doesn't meet the challenge 1s". I commented that I didn't think they met the challenge, but voted them as a portrait since it is a bit iffy. But I do think my average vote on the challenge was extremely higher than normal, do to so many great shots. Van

Your right, we do have to shoot from the heart! But, what I dont get is with such a hugely high response from others and all of the comments (so far) also, how is the voting so different...it does not make sense to me at all. I really wish i could hear from some of the those who voted lower? Truely I am interested...

Although I try to comment on the low scores I do give, I'm afraid that a lot of them are just of uninteresting entries, which don't inspire me to even comment.

I'm not saying that a low score automatically means a boring shot, but that will be the case a number of times.

Those are the ones you will probably NEVER hear from.

Unfortunately that is usually the work of the now-named 'silent sect' who seem to remain silent, except for a few outspoken members.

It is fairly typical to only receive comments that offer praise unless you have a controversial image. People who don't like a photo for whatever reason often don't want to leave a comment for fear of "abusive private messages". Another possibility is that many of the people who vote also have a photo in the same challenge and since they know how their own photo is doing score-wise, don't want to offer a "reasonable" vote because they want to try and improve the placement of their own shot by "pulling down the average" of the other shots in the challenge.

You are lucky in that at least your entry brought you some income! =]

Don't you really then have to pay even more attention to what the world at large wants ?

Do you get drummed out of the silent sect if you break the bonds of silence and become outspoken ?

Can you be an outspoken member of a silent sect ?

For career certainly...though not the world, just one person at a time.
For the photos I shoot for myself, absolutely not.

I think I voted one 3 for the contest and my average vote is probably around 6 or a little higher with several 8's, a few 9's and a 10. As far as commenting goes I don't comment on shots that I can't see anyway to try and make it better. It's not that if someone followed my advice the photo would suddenly jump up the scoring ladder but at least if I'm gonna critique/comment, I'd like to have something constructive to say like so that the photog can at take a stab at a different approach the next time out and at least see if he/she likes it. People don't have to cater to my desires with the portraits; I'll score shots high even if I don't personally like 'em as long as I can see the artistic merit. A shot that only a mother could love because it is underexposed and shakey and you can't see the eyes or make any personal contact with the subject (be it human, animal or otherwise) is probably gonna get a lower score from me.

I'd echo Terry's reply that when I shoot for pay I only have to please one or two people and its a much easier audience than DPC, FredMiranda or PhotoSIG. Mom and Dad or boyfriends/girlfriends, etc don't really care all that much that you can see the outline of an object in the background and that the photo was taken with the lens wide open. They're usually looking to make a good, clearcut connection with the subject or they're looking for something that truly captures the essence of that little one as they run and play (but it still needs to be in focus and clear). Heck, I've been solicited to sell photos that I would buy even tho I shot 'em. But, then again, to me and most people I work with the portrait is about making that strong visual connection.
