reading an article on exposure with the digital rebel i noticed something about how the metering system works that i haven't seen before.
i've also read a number of complaints here about the limitations of the metering of the rebel. i thought this statement shed a bit of light on how it works. the evaluative metering isn't necessarily based on the center point in the viewfinder, but actual changes with whatever focus point is active.

Originally posted by rudy winston of canon:

the digital rebel uses a 35-zone evaluative metering system that takes into account a broad area around the active AF point... The concept is that exposure metering is concentrated on the subject - with less likelihood of the exposure being thrown off by the background or other objects that might have different tones or be illuminated differently from the subject itself

all modes but manual (M)-
this works both in basic modes, and in creative modes. so no matter what mode you are in you know how the camera is metering. unless you are in M mode - and the metering style is centerweighted average.

in Creative modes -
by using the AE lock function ( the * next to the mode select dial )- you can force the camera to use partial metering ( 10% of the picture area - centered ) you zoom in the subject centered in the frame, meter the shot - press the * button, and recompose with the locked reading.

the article didn't mention something i have read a few times, about forcing the partial metering by using the Av+/- button, and the shutter 1/2 way down to get a partial meter reading of 10% of the center of the frame. i emailed the author, and asked if this was in fact an option, and what modes its available in. i will post the response here if i get one.

Just an aside - you can actually bookmark threads in your browser, so that you can go back to them easily.

We need to change the site council icons again.

And whats the difference between This and just the comments that thanks someone for the information? Seems a bit extreme to me!

I was trying to avoid having the DPC forums turn into DPReview where every other reply is "Bookmark". This forces the thread back to the top of the "recent forum activity" list (without adding any content), and causes tens of hundreds of users to re-view the thread only to see "Bookmark" over and over again.

I don't see the benefit of using server-side resources and inconveniencing other users of this site just for the benefit of one person.

Apparently nobody else has a problem with these pointless follow-ups, so I'll leave them be in the future.

it seemed very effective at minimising the pointless follow-ups at least, so that's good. I personally agree that the various 'bookmark' comments are pointless.

So, saying thank you is pointless now? hmmmm.

how about the common BUMP....

jeesh - it was still at the top of the recent list...

If it was up to me, I'd have a rule against "bumping" for the same reason that I don't like "bookmark"-type replies.

This link shows all of the active topics in the last 24 hours, so even if it isn't on the "most recent" list, it is still very easy to find topics that have been active recently, even if you can only visit once a day.

Credit where credit is due Eddy, I never realised that was there, thanks.

FYI, it is easily accessible by just clicking the word "Community" in the navigation menu bar (the actual menu title itself, not a selection from the menu.)

I think that might be part of the problem - that sort of UI design is a bit non-obvious.

Here's a good resource. Might be a little simplistic for some here but I've found these lessons great (even if they are a sneaky way of promoting Canon accessories). //www.photoworkshop.com/canon/lessons_16-20.html
