That actually makes a lot of sense.

As a photo for the PH challenge?

I feel your pain.

I have to remind myself to do what I normally do and shoot what I normally shoot. When the deadline approaches, I'll look back over the last week's worth of shooting (mostly crap) and see if anything fits. That's been my MO lately anyway. Any attempt to consciously shoot something that I think will win a PH will fall flat. A recipe for failure. For me anyway. There sure are a lot of contradictions in this "challenge."

Well said! Confinement breeds Inspiration. I usually build my own, smaller cage, in cases when the challenge description doesn't provide enough limitations. Either that, or I'll drink a lot of cheap wine before I shoot. Blindness can sometimes make things clearer.

Yep. Agreed. Steve and Brian added valid points to this as well. I think I'll take Steve's approach and create my own cage for this challenge. BTW, I believe Bear has often made this point about restrictive topics breeding creativity.

There are even big, important peer-reviewed journal articles that say restriction encourages more creativity than freedom. Freedom gives us the option to take the easy way out!

I'm trying to decide if I'll have more fun coming up with something I like or if I'll have more fun voting.

You've never won a posthumous so how would you know?

If indeed such is the case then one would think that creativity would abound in structured challenges... but I am absolutely convinced that Posthumous would disagree with this statement.

Conversely, in this situation we are removing the shackles normally associated with regular challenges and as such stifling creativity.

Go ahead... tell me I'm wrong.

I didn't say that creativity is impossible when there are no (or should I say "limited") restrictions. I just said that there are journal articles that agree with Bear and those who think restriction helps/encourages/whatevers creativity.

Of course there will be exceptions and some people will prefer to have as few restrictions as possible, but can you honestly say that you don't see how restrictions can help? People are lazy. (If weren't, we wouldn't have any motivation to invent things that make our lives "easier.") We try to take the easy way out when we can. Putting restrictions on what we can and can't do forces us to think in a way we normally wouldn't, which some might say is the definition of creativity.

ETA: I think this challenge *does* have a lot of restrictions on it. Just reading this thread will show you a bunch of restrictions that people think this challenge has. But since this challenge is forcing us to think in a way we normally wouldn't, I think there will be a lot of creative entries. I was originally talking about restrictions and creativity more in respect to the bigger picture, not just this challenge.

You're wrong because voters in general don't reward creativity. Just look at the front page.

I really hope the voters vote in the spirit of Don posthumous for this challenge. I myself can't wait to vote and reward some very postumous-esque photos! Yea for this challenge!

Indeed, and a great number of the shots that some people would have us interpret as art are nothing of the sort. What I do see are mindless attempts at generating images that some believe fit the prescribed mold.

Don't get me wrong... there truly are images worthy of consideration, but the fact remains that most are no more appealing than those you seemingly dislike.

A chacun son point de vue.

I entered something.. I don't think it will win anything, not even a brown. My only hope is to be able to keep it in 6s range.

Yea, Ray! Dig out that Lensbaby you've got buried under all that Canon gear. Perfect opportunity to get back on the challenge entering horse. The more the merrier!

The only thing about this challenge that scares me a little is the "Advanced Editing", but I haven't let that stop me from entering my "Basic Editing" compliant images in other such challenges.

What I like best about this one is all the commotion about "thinking differently" and "trying new things". Those things really seem like the best ingredients to make for a true "challenge".

Something that has come up a few times about the typical winners and front-page images is that they often "lack creativity". I can understand that one, but I'm starting to think about that whole thing in a different way, too. I've never submitted a water-drop or wine-glass shot. Frankly, I haven't got the setup for these things, but they would be "new" subjects for me. They would also be true challenges, if I were to put my mind to the task and pursue them. Those topics may seem "ho hum" to some, but that may only be because there might be a lot of history for those kinds of shots. I honestly do feel similar about many of the ribbon shots, but not all. There's an area of "fake" or "fabricated" beauty that totally turns me off. However, I do still feel a tug of interest for certain water drop shots. I have been fascinated by time-lapse and high-speed film recording since I was a kid, and some of the water drop shots can pull me back to that time of early discovery. Eventually, I will submit something like that, and it will be an accomplishment and, I hope, done with creativity.

Even though I might be put off by some of the typical "eye-candy" shots, I can't help but think about these ideas and consider that the photographers of these "un-creative" shots may actually be applying great creativity (certainly great technical skill) in their shots, even if the choice of subject may seem to lack creativity on the surface.

Anyway... I'm just spewing some oddball thoughts I'm having a couple/few hours past my bedtime, after taking time to catch up on this thread. Good luck to everyone who even attempt to rise to this challenge! The effort alone should be worth the price of admission... ;)

Think of it this way. DPC is a bar. Every Tuesday and Sunday night they have awesome cover bands. You know you'll have a good time rocking out to your favorite hits. But this is songwriter night. Most of it will probably suck, but some people are willing to risk that in order to hear singers struggling to find their own voice.
