So can someone go into detail on exactly what a post humous ribbon is so when people go to vote they know what they are voting on?

just shoot a blurry back and white or monochrome and you should do well..

That may ribbon, but the twist will be when wine glasses and water drops from this challenge end up in the posthumous thread.

Here's the original explanation and intention behind the posthumous ribbons:

I'm creating this thread to encourage people to show, week after week, challenge after challenge, their preferences for different photos than the ones winning DPC ribbons. I think it's important to give some visibility to other works not aligned with the mainstream taste, and give support to photographers with different views and approaches to photography.

So, after each challenge, you are encouraged to post here your personal winners, photos that did not won a DPC ribbon and are not align with the masses taste, but won your heart instead.

Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference. Let̢۪s show some.

A warm comment in a photograph can do a lot.
Jorge.

I think just trying to get a black and white blurry image is the wrong approach really (only two out of my nine PRs have blur as an overt feature). ubique recently started this thread in which he quoted Paolo Pellegrin as saying, '"I'm more interested in a photography that is 'unfinished' - a photography that is suggestive and can trigger a conversation or dialogue. There are pictures that are closed, finished, to which there is no way in." and i think that's an interesting way to look at photography. Much of what does really well on DPC can be seen as being 'closed' (this is not necessarily wrong, it's not a value judgement-just different) whereas the photographs that pop up in the posthumous thread are often more open to interpretation, have an air of mystery to them. That's certainly the type of photography i like making and what i get most out of other peoples images. Blur and black and white is a good way to create this openness. People don't just like them because they are blurry or B/W they like them because they spark the imagination, send the viewer on a journey and delight or unease them.

One of the most exciting challenges for me in a while!!!!!!!

My fear too is that this will be interpreted as the Blurry & Abstract challenge. Posthumous ribbons were never about recognizing those qualities of an image in and of themselves. More to the point –- what Clive said.

Don̢۪s picks from the last Free Study. Some are blurry, some are abstract, but almost half are neither.

Just the discussion on this thread is already interesting, particularly what Clive's said.

This might help.

â€Â¢ The images that win posthumous ribbons are usually only incidentally about photography.

This is great-really got me thinking! Even if I come up with nothing, enjoying the thought process!

My highest score ever got me a posthumous ribbon.

This is as wrong as saying posthumous ribboning images are blurry and full of noise. It's offensive. NOT joking.

Surely anyone that wins a ribbon in this challenge effectively does not meet the challenge?! :-)

Don gives his ribbons to many other shots. The blurry and abstract stuff is just the stereotype. I was very pleased to get one of his ribbons on a shot that was rated "meh" by the masses, but is one of my favorites. He saw the same thing in it that I did:

Note the word, usually, there Oliver. I think Paul is quite right really but as i said, i don't think it is a value judgement. A lot of the more commercial types of images, such as on your profile page, are 'closed' in the way mentioned above and there is nothing wrong with that as they, in a sense, need to be. They have to be about the technical aspects of the image and the product itself. There is no 'way in' to your image of of a lemon in a glass. It just simply is as well as being technically superb. Same goes for the images on the DPC front page at the moment. I don't think you should feel offended by this though.

You're quite right; they are usually offensive as well. Sorry. AM joking.

This is one of only my two personal Posthumous images and hangs in the Posthumous Gallery (lol) and I love it, but the voters HATED it. the 4.93 score didn't surprise me as it's not the normal eye candy, but there is much beyond the first glance. I don't mind the 4.93 at all as there is so much more to the photo than the first glance impression. I, for one, think the challenge will be full of interesting images, more artsy, more "deep" images or "open" as someone previously mentioned, shots that will challenge and yet satisfy the photographer, or at least I hope so.
Looking forward to shooting for this!
