Reading this thread has me a bit perplexed, using a hypothetical case; if the challenge was âTake a Picture on Tuesdayâ, should one fell compelled to judge the entry on whether or not the image, was taken on, showed the essence of Tuesday. Many years ago Monday was considered wash day, Tuesday was Ironing day, so using this scenario, should one score a image of a shirt being ironed higher than an exquisite image of a flower or landscape. According to some participants in this tread the shirt should win because it showed the essence of Tuesday. My point is, should a image be judge on the preconceived notion of what a image should look like taken on Tuesday, or just the image taken on Tuesday |

I have a slightly different perspective, or "take", on this. Let me digress slightly... We've all had the experience of looking at a stunning macro-photograph and saying "OMG! I had no idea..." when viewing, revealed, something hitherto unseen by us. It's a great experience.
That's how I feel about dead-of-the-night shots; at their best, they enhance and reveal aspects of our environment we'd never quite perceived before. Colors are revealed in long-exposure photography that we can't even process with our limited, human night vision. There's a *softness* a lot of the time, too, that speaks volumes about the fuzzy, imprecise boundaries of what we usually consider to be the here-and-now.
So what I'm getting at here is, I'm a lot less concerned with some preconceived notion I might have had (I try to avoid those) regarding what I *expected* to find at this hour, and a lot more interested in what, quite unexpectedly, I actually DO find when I take my images home and open them up :-)

I should have stayed in bed for sure, My entry was shocking but I had to enter after 3 nights of attempting to capture a decent photo, but I dont sleep well at night so it is not so bad!
My 4th entry
1st entry came 46/95 which I was quite happy with.
current entry is sitting at 4.398 with one unuseful comment!
2 DQs, which was understandable as I didnt read the rules properly!
It is all a learning curve and I am enjoying it, I can only get better...right? |

Gah!
I too should have stayed in bed.
I went to bed last night with my entry at 7.1.
Today it's at 6.1
Let's hope the trend doesn't continue! |

The key (IN MY BOOK) is ENJOY.. Don't think you have to committ suicide over a low score, have some tough skin but learn by some of those comments, look at other peoples pictures (challange and portfolio) figure out "your style" and don't expect to impress everyone with it. If we all liked the same thing we'd all shoot like Ansel Adams! |

My voting reflected agreeing with Robert's sentiments, and my voting average was higher than my norm.

I'm not sure what the voters have been thinking over the past hours as my score has been steadily creeping downward. My shot is pretty indicative of the night configuration that at least I'd assume would convey "Wee hours...".
C'est la vie.....

I hope everyone also saw the fine print that the winning photo will have to have scored between 4.00 and 5.00. I'm in the driver's seat! |

As a new guy as of last week I think it's all quite interesting.. I did try and convey the early time and also add a twist to the story.. it's to my liking but I know alot of traditional photographers prob won't dig it (in fact, someone already challenged it.. welcome!).. but I like keeping myself sharp with creativity so I'm having fun with it.. I figure if you participate you're already ahead of the game.. like gretzky said if you dont shoot, you cant score (hey that quote works for photos too, nice)
cheers

I believe the quote was "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take," but I shouldn't be guessing when google is up to my right. Either way, considering this is your first challenge I can see how you're doing by checking you profile page. I'm not stalking, just wanted to see where you were at. You have a good score for DPC, especially on your first challenge. If it is too "out there" for some voters, it must be technically well done.
Regardless, do what makes you happy and it'll be a great experience. |

mine has gone down as well.
The weekend is comming though. I've always found that the weekend voters are more kind than the weekday voters (with the exception of the folks who vote in the first hour). |

That's awesome, Sara. The only comments I've received are, "eh, I'm off to favorite this shot over here." I can only assume they're talking about you. Can't wait to see it. I already have, but you know what I mean. |

I was slightly above/below 6.5 for the first 50 votes, then it dove to 6.1 & change and has remained there for the rest of the 110+ votes since....

I had been up to 7.8 after 26 votes... I knew that wasn't going to last. It is still going to be a personal best. With only 43 entries it may actually get a ribbon... I would say the ribbon was a sure thing except for the quality of the competition. All in all this has totally made my week!!!!
I am a little jealous of SaraR... I've never had a picture that has been marked as a favorite. I guess I will have to put that as one of my goals. |

Oh well, so much for my theory on weekend voters being more kind. It will still be a personal best, but I will have to wait for a score over 7... |

You have some great scores going in this thread - and a very high number of votes! Congrats to all the brave souls who were willing to participate (Not I)! |
