I am considering upgrading my video adapter on my PC to something that is a little faster and has more onboard memory. My current system has a 12mb integrated AGP video processor. I do not have an AGP slot for an expansion AGP adapter. I would like to get a 32mb or 64mb PCI adapter to replace my current video processing.
It has been ages since I last purchased a video card. I need some suggestions... is the ATI RADEON a good card? I don't play games on my home PC but I think a small kick in the pants with my video card would help me out in the graphics applications just a bit...
Suggestions anyone?

When it comes to video cards these days there's really only two options. The ATI Radeon series or a card with an NVidia GEForce chip. For some reason, I prefer the Radeons. I've got one in one of my home computers and it's pretty nice. The newere Radeon 8500s will set you back a bit, but they're sweet. You also really can't go wrong with a geforce 3 or 4, but a lot of different companies make these boards so finding a good one is a little harder than just finding an ATI. I use a GeForce 3 at work and it's pretty nice, although I haven't done anything too hardcore on it.
Really, all the video cards these days are optimized for crazy games anyway, so finding something that will just make photoshop look pretty isn't hard. Just make sure it can pump high resolutions through high refresh rates.

I have a GEForce and I haven't had any trouble to speak of. I can run the web, Photoshop, Pagemaker, Q. Xpress and Illustrator all at the same time. That might have something to do with the dual processors though. |

Any ole G-force card for less than $100 will do the job.
Get plenty of RAM for your computer. I have 256 and I am always hitting the limit when working with Photoshop.
Have at least 512 mb of ram and 1 gig wouldn't hurt.
I have Geforce 2 with 64 megs of ram and its plenty fast for photo editing. |
