okay another Juliet story.

I am so happy taking pictures of the surf in Laguna.

A little girl of about 3-4 was playing just off the shore. Of course , along comes a rogue HUGE wave, she gets swept into it adn starts rolling with the wave and getting dragged out with it

Doom descends me, cos I know I have to go and save her as her parents are no where to be found, but I also know that there is no way I can save her without getting all wet along with my camera. It is either save the girl or the camera around my neck.

So basically,

I need a new camera. i liked my 50, but should i just say screw it and upgrade, should I hang out with my Rebel till the newest Canon comes out. If I do not get another 50, what do you think would be a good upgrade, I am not into video at all, so that would seem a little silly to get a video one too.,

Heh, I was half expected that to end..

"She`ll be sorely missed".

30D

By the way, good job saving the girl :)

Heck, you certainly seem to get into 'situations' ! Good job you were there or it could have turned out really nasty.

....now, of course you can upgrade to a 7D....

7D. No question about it.

really the 7D, even though I am not into the video?

I drove around to day to find a camera store, and not one open or they didn't stock Canons, I really do not know much abotu the 7 or any other upgrade as I was not planning on getting a new camera for several years.

Yeh, the 7D does have HD Video but I have not used that, like you I am not intereted in the video side. It's a great camera and would be a great upgrade for you, trust me!

All right, gonna have a look at that

The 60D would save you a few bucks and offers an articulating LCD vs. faster burst rate and better weathersealing on the 7D. Comparison here.

You saved THE GIRL!?! *grin*

Good choice... but... wow... what a WOMAN!

the little girl learnt a lot of new swear words today, she may even think 'camera' is a swear word too

Hmmm. 60D with the articulated screen. I did go for the 7D but that was before teh 60D was available. You may want to check (I didn't look yet) to see if it uses the same battery as the 50D, since if you had spares for that you can use them. The 7D uses a completely different battery than the 30D did, so I was SOL for battery re-use. It's not a biggie, but it is a factor to consider.

See if you can find somewhere that has one of each, maybe?

But that's JULIET, Deb... A major plus of the 7D is it's built like a tank and reasonably well sealed; these ought to be deal-makers for her :-)

sounding like the 7d is the way to go.

I have had the 50d drying out all day near a fan and it does now turn on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But I have a error 50

no idea what that means, i was trying to figure out where the date/time battery was , but haven't found it.

Oh, Robert has a good point. Juliet, your hand might like the feel of the 7D better than the 60D, now that he brings that up, given what we were talking about at dinner. And I've never used the video on mine. I'm sure it rocks. Just have never used it. You might like it to document aspects of a shoot, though. Could come in handy for documenting the lighting, etc, so you can recreate something if you need to.

Go for it. And now that you have taught the little girl to swear, she should be able to take on a job to pay for that camera.
Go Superheroine!

That was salt water. Err50 translates from camera to human to mean "Goodbye old friend". If you want to try, you might rinse it off with alcohol or distilled water, and put it in a bag of rice for a few days or a week. One of the worst things is to turn it on while it is still wet inside. It may take a week to dry out inside completely, even in a bag of rice.
It's best to remove the battery as soon as possible when things like cameras get wet, and to not put it back until the item is completely dehydrated.
Good on you for making the rescue! That was solid thinking to do the right thing.
You still need to plan on getting a new camera.

Julliet, that sucks. Congrats! You're a mess....lol. You have a very interesting life, girl friend!

Since you all have more experience with newer camera than mine, can't offer any help there, but as far as the location of the time/date battery...remove the regular battery, look inside the compartment along the wall. The time date battery should be in a very small, thin cassette like holder that slides out.
If all else fails, dear friend, read the d*** book! :P

Hugs to you, sweets! And bless you for saving the little girl with the soon to be discovered potty mouth. :~0

7D or 5D mk II

Full Frame is kinda cool (I've been borrowing a 5D for a couple of weeks now) but it certainly has some very PITA behaviors.

The 7D has all of the goodness of the 50D plus a much better metering system.

I'd say either would make you very happy, although if you intend on playing superhero much more, a nice 1D body might be a good investment, as the damn things can take an INCREDIBLE amount of abuse..

But in the end, considering your style? I'd almost absolutely go for a 5D mk II if you can afford it, or perhaps (and I'm being serious here), go try out a used 5D, you'll probably never spend a better $1000....

ETA: Great job on saving the girl, frankly the parents should have already bought you a new camera... Then again, the fact that they weren't there speaks volumes to how likely it is that the child is highly valued...

If you ever get bored with photography, you need to write your memoirs.

As for which camera, I think you need to find a tank that takes pictures.

I just got a mental picture of our superhero with a waterproof helmet cam.

That is awesome, saving the little girl! Kudos to you! (Sorry about the camera though)

Really not happy with my 7D. I'm having to reduce the noise on every single stupid shot I take. Either there's a noise problem, or if other people are correct and the shots are underexposed, then there's a metering problem. Because it is truly every shot I take, with 400 ISO or higher, that's very noisy.

I'm going down to the local camera store to see if they'll let me try out a 7D. I want to try to do the same exact shot with two 7Ds to see if mine is any different than another 7D. I hate having to denoise every photo.

The moral of the story is: if you're buying local, not mail-order, test out the camera first! (I got it for a discount through canon because my 40D kept breaking.)

Maybe it's time for a Nikon. (If only I could...)

Next time, just fling it while you're running. You'd probably have better luck with sand and high impact than salt water! :)

Take you camera and put it in a sealed bag with rice. The rice will absorb teh moisture and possibly save the camera. However this does nothing for the salt.
