I think I don't have enough creativity skills... I look at the winning photos, I say "Why didn't I think about that?", but yet I can't come up with other interesting ideas for the new challenges.

so sad :(

Don't worry, I know exactly how you feel. I suffer from the same problem!

I find your statement odd, Leo, as you are one of the people whose work I looked up to when I started on DPC, and one of the first membersw I added to my favorite photographers list. What is creativity to you? Is it creating a unique shot in a studio setting, or recognizing the interesting shot when it presents itself in the real world?

I go through the same thing ALL the time. And it's not that I think I am not creative, it's more like the kind of creativity that hits me at random times and almost NEVER when I look at others' work for inspiration. I think you just need to find what works to inspire your unique brand of creativity, Leo. It may not be a recipe for ribbons (as I can attest), but you will produce work you can be proud of.

Yeah, you guys are right. It's not lack of creativity, it's lack of "trying harder". I think my mistake is waiting for an opportunity instead of looking for it, and do things at the last second just to do it. Results, uninteresting dry photos (for most) :-\

Sometimes creativity is like having a poop. If you try too hard, you'll just hurt yourself. If you wait a bit and let it come out, it can be very satisfying. So be careful how hard you try.

You need to see a doctor.

I usually know I have to do better. Better settings, better places... however I feel pretty much lazy and not do all those things thinking "I'll find something last second". I feel challenges are not as important... just another challenge, "I'll do better next time"! I don't have the perfect wineglass, or droplet settings, but I can do those settings as god as anyone. Why not? the question is why should I? It seems like crazy to spend that kind of time and afford for a chance to get a ribbon, or not and disappointed more.

Maybe you need to dual-purpose some shots. Several times I've dual-purposed entries and made money/gifts/front page of newspaper, in addition to a challenge entry.

I admit, I look at challenges as a waste of time these days, and have only entered one since the DPL a while back. But I recently bought a little point & shoot which I can now use for challenge entries so I don't feel like I'm wasting time. It's as if I'm looking for something more from the challenges. The big camera can be saved for money-making or special occasions.

I don't care about the score, though. It's some sort of fun or entertainment I'm looking for. But I also feel some sort of laziness toward the challenges, maybe in the way you are. Hmmm.

This is good advice - lots of folks here submit their challenge shots to other contests, etc. Good example here.

How often do you play in side challenges? It's an excellent way of experimenting and stretching yourself creatively without worrying about getting slammed with low votes. The commenting in side challenges is more like flickr, negative feedback is usually in the form of a loud silence.

I'm considering a point & shoot SC for next month. One of our new members tgbooklover is shooting with a little Lumix and it might be a good opportunity for her to learn a few things and know how to get interesting photos with minimal equipment. I met her and her dad Korriban on the WW Photowalk a couple of months ago and we've been regularly shooting together.

I actually had a SC last month September 2010, BW "Out-of-Camera" Side-Challenge and this month I started another one until the end of this year Street photography with back-light and fill-light. SCs are fun, and something inspires me.

I think I am plain lazy for new ideas... I don't think I lost my enthusiasm, since I have more and better equipment now, lenses, camera, flashes etc. No excuse left other than getting up and doing things better :-\
