I think it's really funny that when someone actually gives a comment that could help improve the image, some photographers won't mark the comment as helpful, but they'll mark comments like "cool" helpful.

How does that make any sense?

And then there are some people that mark all comments helpful. I don't get that either.

I just posted the same thing in my Commenting like a crazy woman thread...

I don't really seriously worry about whether someone marks a comment as helpful as it doesn't mean too much BUT it's nice when it happens nonetheless. But I did have to laugh when I noticed after the Silence challenge (I like to go and see what other people thought about images I commented on) that someone had marked as helpful an "I love this shot" comment but not mine which gave what I feel was more useful feedback about light, shadow, title, theme and focal point!!!

Shrug!

Maybe they just don't share your point of view. You have to remember that comments are most often only suggestions. The recipient doesn't have to accept them even if you share them.

I went back and read your comments. They are excellent - you focus both on the feel and the technical aspect of the shot. It demonstrates a commitment to commenting as well as an ability to articulate what's "cool" or why "I love this shot" (just thought you should know!) only wish you commented on mine.

This challenge and Textures was the first time I didn't mark a comment helpful. I used it more to mark - yep, heard you, thanks for taking the time, I appreciate you sharing your opinion. The few I didn't mark were quite rude and/or came off giving their not-so-factual comment as if it were fact. You can certainly dislike my interpretation but do I really need a creativity-transplant? ;)

You miss my point - I have no issue with people who don't find my comments helpful - as you say, they are just my opinions, and it's actually good to see some users mark comments useful more selectively than the all or nothing approach.

What I find amusing is those users who choose to mark only comments such as "love this" or "excellent" useful, but not any comments actually providing feedback! My point is that they are actually saying, "I like this comment because it boosts my ego/ confirms my belief that the image cannot be improved" rather than "This comment is helpful in providing ideas for improvement/ feedback on why the image might be perceived as it is or voted low".

And that's fine too - but I do think it's funny!

Theresa, thank you for your message. I added a comment to your Silence entry just now, for what it's worth.

:o)

I suppose every comment is helpful in it`s own way.
Even the "one word" comments are letting you gauge how your work is perceived by others.
As I said in a similar thread yesterday. My Silence entry divided voters quite interestingly and the comments I received in that challenge were probably among the most useful that I`ve had.(even the short ones).
I mark all comments useful as I really do appreciate them all and also out of appreciation for people taking the time.

Geewhy I understand... on the few entries I have put forward I have appreciate pretty much most comments because they have all served to help me understand how my image is viewed by others even if they might not tally with my own opinion or provide an idea for improvement.

Yes, that`s my point exactly....You don`t have to agree with the comment, but as long as the criticism is put forward in a constructive manner and not purely abusive..then it must be helpful..even if it is just letting you know how voters perceive your work.
There were one or two comments on my Silence image (yours included) which made me look long and hard at what I had submitted and that`s got to be a good thing.(I`m not saying I agreed with all the comments though) :)

Gordon, I know what you mean.
Some of the comments I have received I have been grateful for but have dismissed. Others I have agreed with instantly. And yet others have really made me reevaluate my image and taught me something too.

I would actually like to see a link where you could post a question about an image to the photographer and have them answer you back for the public to see.

I had a question about one in the past and asked in the comment field which got me know where. All I got out of it was a "helpful".

I'd either PM the photographer and ask then to reply in the comments or directly. They may have marked the comment "helpful" during the voting, and not gone back to look at the page since.

There is also the chance that they don't want the answer permanently associated with the photo ....

I mark them ALL helpful so I know I've read it. If it's not marked, that means it's new.

dumb system? ... maybe, but once you give me a comment - it's mine now, and I choose to click 'em! You have fun (or not) with your comments and I'll have fun with mine.

;)

I think the overall best solution to the problem is to stop marking anything helpful. In the greater scheme of things, this check box doesn't mean anything. If you leave a comment that you feel is helpful, then it IS helpful. Likewise if you receive a helpful comment.

I mark them all helpful because, so far, I have found them all helpful. My comments have ranged from "This may be one the worst images I've ever seen." to "Great. 10". And in between I have also received many insightful observations followed by suggestions on how to improve the shot or avoid the mistake. Sure, some are more helpful than others. But if anyone took the time to punch a few keys and let me know what they thought, that helped. So until there is a sliding scale ranging from "a little helpful" to "This guy should be a professor helpful", then I will keep marking them all helpful.

(Note: I reserve the right to not mark comments such as "This is a photograph" as helpful)

i think its nice that people would even take the time to post a comment. who cares if it is helpful or not. i'm lucky to get any response to my pics...lol!!

John

I can understand people who mark none helpful, people who mark all helpful and people who only mark those helpful which they feel will help them improve their work.

And I even understand people who only mark as helpful those comments which praise their entry - I just find their actions amusing.

All in all, it doesn't actually bother me, it doesn't impact on my feelings about the comments I leave, it doesn't encourage or discourage me from leaving them, it doesn't stop me from learning by the very act of writing them...

This is all just observation really...

I wish there were two checkboxes: Thanks for the comment! and "This comment was helpful." I tend to check 'em all because I appreciate someone taking the time to write something, "helpful" or simply a thought. Right now, for instance, in the Off Screen Expecation challenge, I've received 141 votes, but only 3 comments, and since I don't appear to be headed for a ribbon (although there's still time for a bunch of people to rate it a 10!), I could really use the feedback.

Usually I forget that I can mark comments helpful or not, so mine really don't have any logic to them, it's basically just whether or not I remembered...if a comment is helpful I'll mark it helpful if I think about it..more often, I don't. And if a comment wasn't helpful, even if it had a critique, then I don't mark that either.
