this year at the AGM of our CC there were no nominations for any position of the club, with the entirs committee standing down this year, most of whom have been long serving it looks as if the club is headed for recess.
The writing has been on the wall as the decline started about 3 years ago, and there seem to be severalreasons for this happening. We started several new inititives this yar based on a questionaire which we circulated to members some 12 months ago. Following there preferences we issued a program containing the things that were apparently what the majority wanted. Wrong we had a decline in meeting attendance and grumbles of discontent.
Pehps clubs have had their day,?
There is a Move in Foxton,a small town North of here to reserect their camera club which folded some 10/12 years ago,any suggestions which may make this successful I could take to the open meeting the organisers are planning?

You really need a strong personality to lead the whole thing.
You can have the best organized club in the world, but without someone to lead it, it won't go very far. You have to have someone that is somewhat autocratic as well. Most groups don't work well on consensus, even though most of us say that's what we want.
It's a lot more work than you think it is.

I suggest:
meetup.com
to look for groups to go out shooting with. My wife uses it for her mom's club to get the kids together and it runs quite well. The site is excellent. I just typed in photography for my area and got lots of hits.
Forget the club...try a meetup. |

Ditto. Just recently joined one where I live. Frequent photo discussion/critiques, both on the weekend and during the week, as well as shooting outings. Good stuff. |

I'll see you both and raise you one...
Our Meetup Photography Group is very successful and popular although it still could be improved. It's success is due largely to the leadership of the organizers, especially the head organizer. She really works at it and I often think that she must get some form of monetary compensation because of how much time she puts into it and a couple of other Meetup Groups that she has started.
We have monthly themed 'Main Meetings' at which we bring up to three prints for what is sort of an informal vote for the best. The top five or six are asked to present their photo to the group for discussion.
Our outings are numerous (3 - 4 per month) and often interesting. Two notable outings are the Homestead Miami Motor Speedway where we have almost unlimited access everywhere except the track itself while cars are running. Otherwise, we are free to walk through the garages and even across pit row during races. This incredible access to races (even Nascar) was due to the hard work of our organizer and the respect that our club has gained in the community. The other notable outing that is upcoming is the exhibition game on October 12 between the Miami Heat and the Moscow basketball team. Other than the press, we will be the only photographers allowed in the arena.
Recently, we have had an increase in classes for our club to an average of two per month....topics ranging from the business of photography to copyright, and fashion photography and lighting to composition and workflow. Our organizer has been able to attract successful professional photographers to share their knowledge at two hour classes that cost $15 per person.
As far as the comment "Forget the club...try a meetup", I've always thought of our group as both. Shoot Miami is a club that has been organized through Meetup.com. It would be successful even if it wasn't based on Meetup.com due to the leadership of the founder and co-organizers. I think that most any club that made itself interesting and valuable to prospective members would be successful also.
edit to add: I forgot to mention that the fact that our meetings and classes are held in the upstairs room of an Irish Pub don't hurt either. We get the room for free and are encouraged to order something to keep it worthwhile for the pub to continue to allow us to use this room. No problem...they have a great menu and large selection of beers.

I am a member of your meetup group but havent' actually gone south to any of your events (I'm up in WPB). I started a meetup photography "club" called the PBC Photo Walkers on meetup.com almost a year ago. We have started off much simpler... one meetup per month. We now have 239 members and we get around 40ish at each meetup.
We do have a sponsor (a photo printing company) that offers three prints each month to the photographers of their favorite 3 shots from each meetup.
I do really like the idea of doing a critique thing. I need to keep it simple for now since I do the majority of the work but maybe someone else can join in and help with it. I'll check your site to see how you guys do it... |

I don't know if there is a magic formula but I joined a local club a few years ago and it is a strong growing club so I can share some of the things I think they do very well. First off the club is easy to find, most new visitors find out about the club from our members and or through our club web site, so I think those two things are a great places to start but once you get them there they need a reason to come back. In our case we are wholly focused on nature photography which seems to help because of the shared interest of the members, I think some clubs suffer when they do not have an identity and all the members are going different directions or lack common interests.
We have 2 meetings a month, the first meeting is for all members and visitors and includes a monthly speaker followed by photo competitions based on scenic, wildlife, wildlife captive or controlled, and open (anything goes as far as pp just has to be nature related) categories. The second meeting is for members only and is for PP and or business topics that members are encouraged participate and present. Attendance for a typical meeting is around 50 people. The club is filled with photographers of all levels a couple of years ago the competition was split into a regular and master devisions to help make it better for some of the newer photographers to compete on a more equal level. We also have a monthly newsletter and the leadership communicates regularly through email with meeting information, follow up emails, and any special interest information people may find useful and encourage participation.
