Is it possible to attach a small monitor that you can view while setting up a shot so you don't have to look thru the view finder? These little 5-6 inch LED monitors are fairly cheep (less than 100) and thin and will run for hours off a $10 rechargeable. I sure would like to connect to one and preview my shots. How about connecting to a TV or PC?

Can you link me in the direction of these $100 5" to 6" battery operated monitors?

I think your only option is going to be to shoot it tethered using a computer, because you'll need (as far as I know) something to read and store the images themselves.
To do so, you'll be looking into what is called tethered shooting. Nikon's Camera Control Pro is what Nikon suggests using, however, there are other options out there to use, as well. Canon users luck out and get this capability with their camera, as far as I know they only need the correct cable to connect.
Unfortunately, because your camera does not support liveview, I do not believe it will help you to set up the shot, as only images actually captured (shot) will display. Having said that, it could still be useful for you, not knowing your intents, it's sorta hard to say.

ETA: Free alternative to Camera Control Pro posted in the forums Free tethered shooting for PC. If you are a Mac user, definitely check out //www.sofortbildapp.com/ No live view, but very solid and free!

Yes, but I can't at the moment. Actually I had a machine tool that had an old crt that was no longer repairable and our service guy replaced it with a small led display. I had to mount it in the control but other than that it was just use the 12vdc, signal and ground.. works great....$125 for 8 inch COLOR LED. Try google. This service guy did a 5 inch for his dive camera and powers it with the $10 battery and uses a $15 charger from Fry's

The d80 comes with a cable for video out. I have connected it to the video in on a portable DVD player. Output is very low res, and the camera LCD will not display at the same time. I don't know about the monitors you mentioned.

With the DVD player, I did it once, didn't see any advantage.

Out of curiosity, does this allow display during shooting, or just like in the slideshow display?
ETA: Meaning... when you're connected to the tv/whatever can you still capture images?

Yes, it basically just replaces the lcd display--so you see menus, etc, on it while shooting: anything you can see on the back of the camera will be seen instead on the dvd player screen. So, when pressing buttons and such, you have to look at the dvd player while operating the camera.

I suspect, but do not know, that newer cameras might support higher res outputs which might be useful, I suppose. And they might allow both the lcd and dvd player to operate simultaneously. My experience with the d80, though, was that the dvd player screen was just larger and much grainier. I'd guess there are better options now, though, in the late model cameras.

Odd that this topic came up. I was watching a BTS video on splash photos on fstoppers ( //fstoppers.com/how-to-shoot-splash-photography/ ) and one of the items the photog uses is a lilliput 7" HDMI monitor. I don't think that's an option for the OP however for around 200 you can get a pretty decent sized screen to review your images on if your camera has an HDMI output. It is supposed to work well even in bright light apparently. (One site that carries them here: //www.dhgate.com/lilliput-669hb-7-hdmi-monitor-450cd-m2/p-ff808081295f48b20129686794696dfe.html )

Thanks guys. You are correct. I want to PRE-view and shoot. The d80 LCD works for RE-view but I wanted to eliminate the viewfinder. Look like I can't until I upgrade.
