That's exactly why I don't shoot weddings.

Because the wedding might return fire?

I'm sorry...why would the photographer want them to pose with guns? Was he photographing the Beverly Hill Billies? Rule number one: Always treat a gun as if it is loaded. Rule number 2: Always treat a gun as if it is loaded.

As an aside, it might be morbid but I am curious what kind of pictures he got before the gun went off.

No offense, but did you actually read the article?

"In southern Italy, and especially on the isle of Sicily, it is traditional for guns to be fired at special family events and also festivals."

I think that was the one sentence I didn't read. (I knew it was in Italy though). Darn the interwebs and my short attention span! :)

Is it horrible that the first thing that came to my mind was...

BOOM! HEADSHOT!

In what way does that last sentence--" In southern Italy...it is traditional for guns to be fired... supercede Rule #1 and Rule #2 ?

It doesn't... But it does answer question #1 "why would the photographer want them to pose with guns?"

Those puppies should have only been loaded immediately before they were fired, and why fire real bullets into the air and not blanks.

Sometimes that is a great policy - however, my home defense weapon is always loaded, cocked and ready to fire once the safety has been disengaged. After all, an unloaded gun is almost as effective as a rock or baseball bat..

As per why fire real bullets? Well, they never said the guns were going to be fired at any festival, just that it's common for such behavior... One can assume those were either home defense weapons or hunting weapons, in which case, real bullets would indeed be useful.

But a rock or a baseball bat are highly unlikely to ever accidentally kill anyone.

sorry.... didnt mean to hijack this as an anti-gun rant.

So, get this...... A close friend came within inches of death, as they were out climbing in Durango Colorado when a rock above him was dislodged and destroyed most of his face..

Yeah, rocks can accidentally kill... But in the end I wasn't talking about accidental, I was talking about very deliberate use.

In the end it is not about guns themselves but stupid people with guns. A loaded gun being used as a prop is just plain stupid, both on the owners part who handed them out and the photographers part who used them without assuring they were unloaded.

Back to your regular programming.

ha, what a surprise to come home for lunch to find how this progressed. I love public forums...

Anyways, if anyone is just stumbling across this, read the original article, it's a unique story among many interesting wedding photog stories...

Couldn't agree more, but, then again, I think we have FAR too many stupid people and I feel we live in a NERF society that makes it impossible for nature to follow it's intended course...

C. Darwin never accounted for guardrails and airbags... Let alone modern medicine.

ETA: What does happen when a species becomes nearly immune to natural death? Probably not a beneficial thing IMHO.

I really meant natural selection of stupid.

Perhaps my reply was unclear, I had meant to agree with you first :)

Yes, indeed, I think this may well have been a "natural selection" event (assuming it was the photographer who managed to shoot himself, should it have been the bride/groom or anyone else who shot the photographer, well, then, accidental homicide charges would likely be appropriate)

When handling a firearm, the first thing I do is check to see if it is loaded. Then I check the saftey.....

But you did it anyway, didn't you?

If a rock or a baseball bat are used irresponsibly, they most certainly can kill someone. A gun is just the same way; if it's used irresponsibly, it can kill.
