We often complain about people telling US "no photography allowed". I was pretty much that jerk last week.
I was driving my wife and two daughters, 8 and 12, through part of the Adirondack Mountains, in northern New York State. My daughter needed to pee and also change her girl stuff, so I pulled over where there was an extra wide shoulder. My wife was helping my daughter, and they weren't too far into the trees.
We hadn't seen another car all morning, but of course one decides to pull off behind us at that moment. A man & woman, about 60 years old. The man gets out of his car, then gets back in, then gets out again. I didn't think anything of it until my 8yo daughter says, "He's got a camera!" in an alarmed tone. The guy was actually meandering toward a spot where he would be able to get a better view of my wife and other daughter.
I got out of my car, slammed the door hard, and stormed on over near the guy, between him & my wife & daughter, then proceeded to give him the stink -eye. He acted nonchalant but turned his meandering in another direction and then to his car. This was NOT a scenic stop, for sure. WTF did he want a photo of? I heard his wife(?) say something to him from the driver's seat. He got back in the car and eventually left.
I don't know if he was for real or not, but sheesh. I was close to breaking out the Kung Fu. |

Sorry man, I couldn't resist, but yeah, that is pretty sketchy. Like did he assume someone was going to the bathroom and it got him to pull over? Bizarre.
Something like that happened to my uncle and his family when camping, though no camera was involved, but another camper was watching his daughters "ease nature" and it turned fist to cuffs. It takes all kinds man..... |

It was bizarre, and there were plenty of very scenic stops, with river and mountain views, just ahead, and I never saw their car again. :-/
Moo Goo Kung Fu, mmmmmm. |

I watched dozens of people pull over their cars when we had stopped, just to see what we were looking at. In our case it was a bison.
I don't suppose your wife and daughter looked like they were checking out the wildlife? |

The sad part is we need to be weary of people that may not be innocent and I would have reacted the same way you did but it is very possible it may have been an innocent mistake, people in the mountains around here will always stop where others stop because they think someone is watching a wild animal or they are missing some great scenic secret only you know about. People will walk over to where you are just to see what you may be looking at, heck I like to stop, look up, and point just to make people wonder what they are missing. I was in Rocky mountain National Park a couple of months ago, we stopped to get a few shots and before we finished we had people kneeling in front of our tri-pods to get the shot we were getting, I had to stop shooting until they got out of the way, I would have been pissed but the shot was not that great anyways. |

I bet occasionally someone will stop to see if you have car trouble. They probably won't need their camera for that though ... |

This didn't happen anywhere near a Chuck-E-Cheese, did it? ;-) |

I'm guessing that he was wondering what you had stopped to look at, like the others said, and got his camera out just in case it was an animal or a good view that only locals would know about. It happens a lot, esp in scenic places like national parks.

Yeah I can relate to understanding that situation. It makes you want to slip and strike out at someone like that. It was a strange, peculier situation. No I would not want anyone photographing my kids in any compromising situations. You should've gotten a picture of him with exif data for the record or for authorities, but that possibly could be turned around saying you shot him first. The authorities would know if he is on any of their lists.
Outside of embarressing situations which should never be photographed,
I really would like to know what actual harm can a photograph do?
I guess not all people respect others' rights and might post pictures on websites without the model releases. Is that the fear?
I personally, would not post anything on the internet without first, getting model releases from the person or parent, if minor. If it is a public event in a public area, there is some limited journalistic rights of newspaper photographers.
I have posted some Birthday Party pictures I took in the Park Picnic pavillion for a friend. That included all of the kids' friends and parents. Now I did not ask permission of each parent and kid attending. I also didn't use it for sale to stock Photography, where they require model releases.

Just to clarify: You don't need a model release to post things on the internet. The only time a model or property release is required is if the image is going to be used for commercial purposes. Journalism is not a commercial purpose, neither is making and selling prints as art. If you want absolute assurance that images of you and/or your kids wil not be posted on the internet, stay in your house. You don't need to ask permission to take pictures of anyone in public or from public property. Is it good form to ask permission? Of course it is. It's also good form to hold the door for others, but it's not the law.

I had no interest in striking up a conversation, and he rethought his path right away. But at least you had the chance to get off on calling me a coward over the internet. |
