DPChallenge is becoming a DSLR challenge slowly!
Would be nice to have lens info selected same as camera info on every submitted photo. And you can search photos not just by the camera brand but also by lens used!

agree, this would be helpful!

I totally agree, many a times I would like to know what lens was used for a particular picture but there is no way to find that information.

I posted a similar thread some weeks ago. I totally agree, the lens used is as relivant as the SLR it's mounted on, so just seeing "100D" or "10D" or whatever is only half the story. Some people put the lens in the "about" space, but a field that is searchable would be much better.

Yes, definitely! This is something that I always wonder about, and it would be great to have access to that information.

This has been requested several times before. Here, here, and here, for example.

But it is hard enough getting people to fill in the ISO / shutter speed / aperture! I like to view this info, but a lot of people who upload shots to their portfolio don't bother to fill in any details... not even the date the picture was taken!

Anybody with a DSLR can easily add the lens info to the "photographer's comments" box (which I normally do).

That said, evaluating lens quality based on a 640-pixel web-sized image is not very useful IMHO. A lot of defects can be "resized away", and you have no idea how the photographer cropped the original 6+ megapixel image to arrive at the 640-pixel web presentation...

The same argument can be used to say that ISO is meaningless too - after all it'll just get neatimaged to death.

Why not just add the box, and let people fill it in if they want, just like all the others? There seem to have been enough requests that several users actually want it and it would be relatively harmless...

Right on, Gordon..

You make it sound like I'm against the idea. I'm not. I like the idea, and even said "I've always wondered why there wasn't a "Focal Length" box." and "But having a lens entry would be good." in this post. I was just pointing out that DPC isn't a place to evaluate lens/camera performance. I was just using "lens info" as my example, but obviously since editing is allowed, things like ISO are indeed potentially misleading.

If you want to view lens/camera samples to evaluate "quality" and "performance", you need to visit sites like DPReview and Imaging-Resource that provide direct-from-the-camera full-resolution samples.

Oh okay, sorry for the confusion then. Your post seemed like a list of reasons why it wasn't worthwhile.

It would be neat if this field could be automatically filled in for those people with fixed lens cameras when they make their camera selection. But for DSLRs or any other camera with the ability of removable lenses it would not prefill but would allow you to fill in the area (or use the browser feature and select a previously entered lens from the combo box).

Why not also make all of the fields when submitting your photo required fields? Don't allow the submission if the photographer dosn't complete all fields?

Just an idea.

I just wanted to revive this thread for personal interests :)

Having recently bought a Canon 10D, and being in the middle of researching lenes, I'm in dire need to know what lens someone used to take a picture. I feel this is almost more critical than knowing what camera they used now!

I think an added optional text field for lens used info would be a great idea...
