I didn't see anyone had post this yet, and things are about to start, so I figured I'd toss it on here. I had stopped posting a lot of CT/CL class stuff here, as some folks felt it was kinda spammy. I'll just say I'm not trying to spam anybody, I just think they are great classes, and this in particular is going to be a really great workshop.
Zack Arias is teaching a studio lighting class this weekend with CreativeLIVE in Seattle, WA. He'll be using a number of PCB Alien Bee lights and PCB modifiers (the workshop will feature other lights and modifiers as well; but it looks like the ABs will be his primary lights).
Like all CreativeLIVE classes, the class is being recorded to be sold as a video class like most other video-based education out there -- but the "trick" is you can watch the class during the initial recording for free, and even interact and ask questions during the class using a live chat room and/or twitter.
This class is a full weekend workshop -- all evening Friday, then all day Saturday and all day Sunday (detailed schedule at link below, and at Zack's website above). The initial recordings will be rebroadcast an additional time online (also free) each night after class.
More information and schedule is available on this post on the CL website. You can sign up there, or simply watch using the Live video link. You can access the chat rooms via the chat link, or use your own IRC client.
I'll be in and out during the weekend -- cdricephoto in the chat rooms -- feel free to say hi.
Standard disclaimer -- I'm not affiliated with CreativeTechs/CreativeLIVE, Zack Arias or Paul C. Buff Inc. I'm just an attendee of the workshop myself, and thought others here would like to know about it.

Oh, dear. Not sure what I can say about that. Haven't seen any reports of video issues in the chat room. You can try two other feeds from the main CreativeLIVE web -- under the "Live" tab, you can select between high-res, low-res, and alternate feed. The alt feed is ad-based, and hard to watch in my opinion, but if nothing else works, it's "something."
Other primary feeds seem to be working fine for me and at least the 600 others in the chat room right now. Sorry. *shrug* |

got into video, but chat seems to start fine (instructor questions) but as a tab opens for student chat, the whole thing cycles and starts over again......so no chat possible :-(

Wow, this is really good. I love how he shoots both Nikon and Canon, so he knows about both lighting systems. |

Taking last break of the day, and when class comes back, Zack will be discussing his choice of Alien Bees over other flash packages -- including, of course, financial considerations. Should be a great discussion for anyone still on the fence concerning what studio strobes to buy.
Plus, you can hear him talk smack about David Hobby (strobist) -- what's worth the time to watch riche' thar! ;)

Thanks for the post and the heads up. The details on its content are kinda vague... I'm how much will be able to be carried out of the studio to on location shooting... hmm. |

Sunday's live show is underway. Another day of shooting in the studio w/Zack; more advanced topics and more modifiers. |

Coming out the last break in a minute or two... There is some "really big surprise" coming up next -- no idea what they have planned, but might be worth a look...
Also, giving away a 7' Westcott Octobox as a prize shortly. |

I have already learned that I want an Octobox! :) All you have to do is point it at the subject and Voila!, right? lol |

Last note here -- I just wanted to thank all who attended this class -- it was a great success, and there has been a tremendous amount of positive feedback. I'd love to hear any more opinions if you attended or have downloaded the class yourself.
I'd strongly encourage anyone using, or considering purchasing, studio lights (Alien Bees or others) to consider purchasing the class (now available for purchase and download of the video from the entire weekend). While a number of students in the live chat described it as a well-made, weekend-long commercial for Alien Bees, ;) Zack covered several other studio light sources in both discussion and practical application (including various speedlights). For those AB-users, though -- the majority of time, and for 90%+ of the live-shoots Saturday and Sunday, he did hands-on instruction using various Alien Bee lights and modifiers.
Just a few specific highlights from the class:
- In-depth discussion, with examples of the financial savings on purchasing an initial AB studio vs. other "high-dollar" studio lights.
- Managing realistic expectations using the ABs vs. "high-dollar" studio lights, and dealing with some of the unique quirks and personality of the AB lights.
- Suggested studio configurations - including camera bodies, lenses, lights and modifiers.
- Specific additions to and construction of a home-based or commercial studio space, including free-standing flags, cyc wall / cove, flooring, etc.
- A VERY in-depth review of various modifiers for the ABs, including the 22" high-output beauty dish, various grids and several 3rd party modifiers -- complete with live shoots and detailed example photos with each modifier used various ways.
- Detailed discussion and live shoots using the AB ring flash, including the Moon Unit.
- An incredible number of example photo shoots, using various modifiers and techniques; and the best part is the video feed switches back and forth between the shoot and the actual lightroom viewing/develop screen during the shoot (Zack was shooting tethered) -- so you can see the setup, the execution, and the result, all in real-time.
It was, in my opinion, a fantastic class -- for beginners, intermediate-skill levels, and even expert / full-time professionals.
You can see examples from the sessions on the CreativeLIVE web page.
You can see several final-edit images from the weekend, as well as student comments on Zack's blog.
If you're a fan of Zack's work and/or have ever considering attending a workshop with him, this is truly the cheapest way to "get there."
Thanks again for any feedback!
Usual disclaimer -- I am not affiliated with any of the parties mentioned here, I was just an attendee of the workshop and thought others here would be interested as well, etc, etc, etc. |

No kidding he is going to be in my area for a one day thing, and it's $800! I'll order the DVD but for crying out loud that's insane. |
