I have been working on my back yard and in the last month I have torn out my old lawn and planted a new. However, this time (I've done this before at other places I've lived) the lawn seems to be crawling with weeds and one in particular. I'm convinced that even though the grass seed is declared weed-free, the weed came in with the seed as I've never seen this particular weed in my yard before. My lawn book didn't have a quick ID of it and I wondered if anybody knew. It seems like it should be easy to identify as it is fairly distinctive. The picture doesn't do justice to the fact it grows from the ground like a basket or star.
Any ideas? |

No, but it's tiny and white. I'm picking them as fast as I can before the flowers open. :) |

Looks familiar. I think I have them as well, but it's hard to be sure, since your photo is of an immature plant. Have a look at this and see if it looks like what you have.

No, I highly doubt that is it as that plant gets huge plus tends to have a thick central stem. This has no dominant stem and is already flowering (or budding) at 6 inches tall.
It's hard because most weed identification sites just have pictures. I'm going to try my extension office at 10:00, but I seem to remember hearing that they were shut down due to budget cuts.

Only if it is a scratch and sniff photo....or you describe the smell very accurately.

it almost looks like a flower, not a weed. although i guess having them in the grass, and not where you want it, i guss you could call it a weed.

They keys usually work with smell and taste, so get back to me with those characteristics and I'll help you out!

Yep; a rose can be considered a weed if it's growing where you don't want it. |

Not a lot. Oregon has 20,000 medical marijuana licenses, yet Eugene can't put fluoride in the water. Go figure. |
