Is there a memory card in the camera? Do you have it set to not take a picture if no card?

I always recommend the "reboot and see if that fixes it approach, despite the financial implications.

Try turning off the camera, taking out the batteries, removing the lens ... then reverse the procedure: put on the lens, put in batteries, turn it on and re-set clock and settings if necessary, and hope!

You might also try and access the menus and turn off any shutter-lock settings in effect, or reset the defaults.

It could be possible that the card isn't being detected by the camera. Maybe start with removing and reinserting the memory card. If that still doesn't work, does the card work in a different camera or a card reader?

What mode are you shooting in? Do you have AF disabled? If you are in on of the program modes with AF enabled, it might be preventing exposure if the camera doesn't think the focus area in actually in focus. Try manual mode with AF disabled and see if you have the same results.

I would try with these settings *off*, not on. If the camera is somehow malfunctioning and either thinks a card is missing, or the lens is not mounted, it may be preventing exposure. Try again with each of the settings off and see what your results are. If you can narrow it down to either of these conditions, at least you know which sensor may be defective. In the case of the "no lens", an obvious step would be to remove and re-mount your lens.

I'm not sure about the aperture settings on that bodies lenses, but if they are like Nikon, be sure your lens aperture is set correctly (see your manual) before mounting the lens on the body. On Nikons, this usually results an an "F-EE" or similar error on the LCD display, but it will also lock out the camera from taking an exposure. Just another thought.
