Your Rebel XT has an automatic exposure bracketing function. You can set how far apart the exposure is for each shot, and it will do all three in sequence. You also must use the self timer mode when bracketing exposures. This ensures there is no camera shake from the act of pressing the shutter button.

Or you could use a remote for shutter release (wired or wireless).

ok because I am here to learn... i have another question... lets say you have an image... and u want to use it as an HDR...
How do you make the three copies using PSP?? I mean what to you adjust if you "forget" to do it in your camera?

Well, all you are doing is trying to come up with 3 images that have a wider range. So, from one image, reduce the exposure a bit, make it darker, save it. Do the same by increasing the exposure on the original image, and save that. You now have three images... -1 0 +1 ... thats it really.

And, as always, be sure to retain your original unedited version. :)

Ha! Don't worry about that! Everyone is here to help! (to be honest-i'm a bit too drunk to explain it but i'm sure someone else will!)

Questions are good though! Keep at them!

Don't forget about the awesomeness that is Google. There are numerous tutorials and videos out there that can help you as well. And of course the collective minds and skills that is DPC. You will learn a ton here. And forget almost as much :) Well maybe that is just me, just wait to see my score for the Portrait entry. Sometimes you gotta just enter the craziness that you like and forget about the score.

One of the reasons I joined here is because there isnt a lot of "groups" around here that do not cost a fortune to join. I start classes in the fall for photography (after I finish my teaching degree) and I want to absorb as much as I can now. Everyone around here (even those who are still learning themselves) are so friendly and willing to help one another. I think I will be a member here for a VERY long time.

Google confuses me most of the time... my brain doesnt process things sometimes and it sometimes takes 3 or 4 explainations for me to get it... (I have fibromyalgia and it effects brain clarity) which is why I ask so much sometimes LOL

Amen to that.

You'll pick up the HDR stuff the next couple of days Carrie i'm sure. It's really not that hard to get the basics.

:) Good scores i say! The way i deal with the site is that the 'challenge' is with myself. How i can twist my love of photography into the topic. Any scores i get i don't really pay a huge amount of attention to really but i love the peer attention and thoughts i get on my images. It's a great place to learn and stretch yourself.

What I like best about the challenges is they force me to step outside my box. I tend to shoot the same things because they are things that capture my eye the most... and as an aspiring photographer that is not good... the challenges force me to see other things... for instance... I never go to downtown nashville... its a cluster&!@# mess and I hate people (large crowds) however now that I have this nifty new device and this cool HDR challenge... guess where Im going tomorrow evening... LOL (if I can find a decently priced tripod)

The assumption is you are shooting in RAW, and that RAW file contains more image data than a JPG would, so you can create 3 or more exposures from it and then blend them using HDR techniques. Though PSP can open RAW file, I prefer to use the DPP software that Canon provides. PSP13 has a much improved RAW converter, but I am not upgrading and sticking with my combo of Canon DPP and PSP X2.

Ok So I have taken probably 15 sets of images to try for the HDR contest and well its just not working... I think its because I dont have enough contrast going on in the images itself... sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo can you guys give me some ideas of what you look for in the subject when you go out shooting for HDR images??

I looked thru the other challenges but because they already processed it is hard to see the original...

HDR works both ways; you can use it to compress the dynamic range (with a very contrasty scene) or expand the dynamic range (with a very flat scene).

I just had a look on the Photomatix download page, and though the freeware version is gone, they now have a lite version that is only $39. It appears to have more functionality than the previous freebie. Some added tonemapping choices, plus a 64 bit version.

Photomatix can also be used on a single RAW file, which is useful for pulling maximum dynamic range from a shot that might still have over or underexposed areas after coming out of your RAW processor. For $39, I'll probably buy it, especially since the older freeware version cannot read the files from my 50D.

Can you explain the bolded part in more detail? I've been trying to aquire some shots for this challenge but the lighting has been very flat for a few days.

This was an overdone submission that was part of my learning process... among other things...LOL... Like a tilted horizon :) The DPL has worked wonders for me... ANYWAY...

I figured I'd post this one as a warning to those who may be overdoing their HDR's. So consider yourselves warned :)

I'm going out tonight (weather pending) to take my HDR submission, and this time, I'm going to focus on keeping the image looking natural, while at the same time bringing out the tonal range... Details at 11
