That's correct, it's part of the "Bronze Premium Membership" that confers also the 5 weekly slots and some other perks. The "Bronze Membership" is $39, and has perks of its own, notably (besides the 3 upload slots) the ability to submit images directly to critique, although I'm not entirely sure what that means yet :-)

The Silver, Gold etc memberships appear to be "earned", not bought...

OH MY! Well, that's definitely not enough! Would you please post the link so we may see such an incredible image (and we'll boost your views even more!)

This image has over 122,000 views at 1x.com.

Which membership do you have and how many uploads do you get with it per week?

I have the silver membership. The silver, gold and platinum memberships are earned......the bronze can be purchased. I think I have 8 uploads per week......I have never used all of them.....not even close.

I just signed up for a 1x 2010 "yearbook" (hoping to get one of my photos published there), which is $99 and gives you 3 months of bronze premium membership. I am not sure I want to maintain it beyond 3 months, just a regular membership with 1 submission per week has been quite sufficient for me.

By the way, this image accumulated more than 160,000 views, how about that! :)

because it means i didnt just get lucky and, if i did get lucky i would of though it was easy and be let down more in the future.

Did it spike shortly after they added the Facebook, Digg, StumbleUpon and Twitter share links?

yes, when I noticed the views to go through the roof, I traced it to the stumbleupon.com front page where it remained for a couple of weeks ("popularity" is a self-perpetuating thing, obviously)

And they told me it was a nice shot but most of the people that looked at it had problems with the composition. Personally, I like the composition just the way it is and don't plan on changing it. I really don't see where any crop would make it better because I think the useless sky adds dreariness to it. but that's just me. I will probably enter more images out there but I'm not expecting anything. I'm going to try and not let it bother me. Anyway Deb, I like your images.

How do you feel about this crop, and this gradient for the sky?

R.

ETA: Looking at them side-by-side, I think I've overcooked the sky even for my heavy-handed tastes. Somewhere in between?

Ahh, what's a little heavy-handedness. You have to have some fun. I was looking at your crop and it doesn't cut down on the sky. One of the comments was "Too much useless sky". I tried some different crops eliminating some of the sky but it just seemed to take something away from it. Now this is just my useless opinion, but I think the dreary sky and the wide view added something to it. I'm probably not going to make any changes to resubmit it but I really appreciate you giving your input as it's always interesting to me to see how others would process one of your images. Thanks.

The number of views is really good. The average view on my published images is about 21,000 per image. Those are unique views according to the owners. I can't get that anywhere else! The number of visitors to the site has grown a lot, and keeps growing. On the average, 1X gets about 100,000 unique visitors daily.

As for the screening process, it isn't secret. All images go through an initial screening (not by the owners, but by screening crew). Some are rejected immediately (images that we know will never make it to the front page, images with borders or with added text, stuff like that). The rest go either to internal review, to member screening, or are published immediately. In internal review, screening crew discusses publish/reject of the image, in member screening we do the same but after input from the members (votes and comments). Intant-publishes are rare. We publish about 7% of all images sent in for review. Yeah, screener mood and "whim" can have something to do with it, but we do try to be careful and respectful of all images sent in for review. Images that stand out will stand out even if a screener is in a bad mood for a little while. And that's [part of] why we don't have just one screener, but 6 of them.

Thanks for the info Ursala. Has the screening process changed from a year or so ago? I remember when I firat joined there was a lot of talk in the forums about the pre-screening process or the lack of visibility into how it was done. The format you described is much more pragmatic than I had been led to believe.

No, it hasn't. Forums are what they are. :)

Hehe, well, it's good to find out the system actually works, and images aren't just being published because someone "got lucky" :) I worry about that at times!

Rejected...

I can't remember where to look on 1x to see why but I guess it doesn't matter, it failed.

It's a neat shot, a nice capture. But ... what are you trying to say with it? I really think that's the main issue with a shot like this one. It doesn't stand on visuals alone, it doesn't look like it's trying to rely on emotion to communicate (and it wouldn't stand on emotion alone either), it looks like a potential story. But what is the story? What are you trying to say with it? What do you want us, the viewers, to look at, look for, in the image? As a compo, it feels tilted, even though the bottom cement thingy sort of "straightens it", but, I'm not sure that the bottom thingy works for the image or not. There's a lot of empty space that doesn't do anything much. Even the rain patterns are sort of mixed. Anyway. That sounds very negative, but what I'm trying to do is maybe justify a little why images like this one, nice captures, are not published. Maybe it's because from my POV, screening is hard work, and it's tough to keep on rejecting and rejecting and rejecting all these images, and figuring out why. For each rejection, I try to come up with at least a sentence for why I'm rejecting that particular image. I didn't have anything to do with this one, but I tried the same here -- why was this one not published? Anyway.

Haha! I'm still figuring all that out myself.

BTW, they don't like this one, so my acceptance streak is at an end at 1 acceptance, LOL.

I think it's a great shot Bear. I don't think they care what my thoughts are though.

I don't know how you would crop that to make it any better. I think the composition is very good.

Bear, I think you'll like this guys work. His toning is pretty cool, imo. Not standard by any means... and this one made me start speaking in tongues. "hmmm, bulah bulah, fleh, fulllah, mmmooyah,oyah...

Those are nice, Steve. maybe when I grow up I can shoot like that? In the meanwhile, as soon as some slots open up I'm of a mind to throw some more HDRI at 'em and see if any of it sticks. Now that I have one in, I can relax :-)

Reject number two.

Here's what they said.

The composition is good. even despite the symmetry. the colors of the bridge is beautiful, but its missing something else...focal point, alternative subject to the bridge.

Additional feedback

Of those who voted against your image, seven indicated that there is a problem with impact, two noted disturbing objects as a weakness and two selected composition as a reason for not publishing the image.
