I just bought a 2.0X telephoto lens by Digital Optics, supposedely compatible with Sony. It seems that I can't focus on distant objects, could it be that my focal range shortened, bluring everything at "infinity"?

I don't have the F717, but my Sony has a Conversion mode that has to be on when putting on a wide angle or tele lens.

you may need to turn off the laser asist AF beam (you know the funny looking red laser you see in a dark or dim room when you focus)in the menu somewhere...try that to see if it helps

I tried putting on the Conversion Lens mode on, but that disables the zoom... Making my Telephoto lens useless.

the conversion lens mode is ONLY for using a wide angle lens, and it disables the zoom so you only get wide angle shots..

Turning off the AF assist beam should help you out

You might want to try using the Macro mode to focus closer on the teleconverter. I think that is all that the Conversion Lens mode does anyway but this way you can still use the optical zoom.

Also be aware that your entire zoom range might not be useable with the converter in place. Start at full zoom, and back off toward wide angle slowly, you may find you can only go so far without losing focus.

I must have the same 2X converter for my Sony. With it attached, I can focus correctly when I am within a relatively close distance (not infinity) to the subject. When I try to zoom in to a distant object, the camera is unable to focus, even in manual mode.

This makes the converter useless.

Any ideas?

i don't have a sony. but i do know that the 2x converter that canon has for it's lenses affects the auto focus because the f stop is increased. and the camera can only auto focus with enough light.

Is there any response to my "Macro mode" suggestion?

Macro mode doesn't help. When the camera is in fully manual mode, I can't get it to focus through the 2X adapter. When I put it in auto focus mode, the camera focuses for a brief moment, then as the AF tries to lock, it becomes out of focus.

I think the camera has the capability to focus, but I don't know how to force it to do it.

The lens is a POS, I know because I own one and I regret the purchase every time I look at it. Thank god I didn't pay much...

When I bought my sony 707 I got the $299.00 wide angle lens and was not happy with it so I shipped it right back to Sony.

I have had the Sony VCL-MHG07A for more than 2 years (used it extensively for real estate photography), and it works very well.

I actually thought the camera had to be zoomed out all the way before the teleconverters worked, at least was that way with my minolta.
