Actually there were a possible 24 prizes but I ended up only having four entries because they dropped two of the categories that I won at the club level and all four of my images made me very happy :)

Yes I'm allowed to compete next year and I'm going to enter every category if I can swing it.

It was much fun to watch them judge (and really nerve racking) and to see your competitors first hand and to meet the other photographers from all the other clubs.

Nice with the favs, Jeb!

I'm failing miserably in all the challenges I've entered. And not in a good Team Suck way. I shall work to remedy that, and at least fail with something I meant to fail with. :-)

Wow nice Jeb!

I have two new potential personal top 5s in voting right now. And I received great comments from Melethia and NikonJeb on my B/W landscape shot :)

Your image must be pretty doggone good then, 'cause I didn't read all of Deb's challenge to the voters and only saw "Comment on 38......", so I cherry-picked the ones that really grabbed me.

So.....having actually read all of what she said, I have to go back and do 38 in a row....

Duh, Jeb!

You can never fail with things you like, it's the voters that are wrong :)

Cruise nights are also a good place to find some wicked cars to shoot. Shoot some great shots, let them see it in camera, offer to email them and eh wala, you probably have a frickin nice in.

Shortly before I went to BC, I visited the Amish community of Heuvelton near Ogdensburg, in search of a harness shop, as my client (the owner of the infamous Fifi) was thinking about getting some harness made. So camerabag over shoulder, I entered the harness shop and was greeted by the owner's wife. We chatted and I asked if it was all right for me to take pictures of the shop, and that I would not attempt to shoot them. More's the pity, because I have never seen an Amish woman with anything less than beautiful skin, and the guys are no slouches either with those huge beards they tend to grow! I saw so many potentially fantastic shots of the Amish that I was just dying to get. But I'm sure they have enough of a time with tourists trying to covertly get snaps of them with cellphones. But you have to respect their beliefs.

However, the Amish saddler was quite happy to let me shoot the interior of his shop and a couple of lovely Western saddles, and the owner himself took a b he had just made. He took a break from some handstitching to come over and as politely to see the shots I was getting. So I showed them to him and his wife, and was then asked to print some out so they could use them in flyers. I told them I would be back in two weeks' time. And yes, while I was there I shot my Natural Light entry.

So yesterday I returned to Heuvelton and they were suitably delighted with the pictures (I had them printed in both colour and b/w). They offered to pay me but as we hadn't discussed any kind of financial transaction, and they had a sign up advertising maple syrup for sale, I got a jug of that instead. Had fun showing that to Canada Customs! :-)

Anyway, since returning home I've been thinking of trying to do more product shots of Amish handiwork - quilts, potholders, furniture, the like - and just continue to barter photography for goods. And now that I think of it, my cruddy ol' IKEA bookcase just gave up the ghost...would be great to get an Amish-made bookshelf...!

Oh, and the wife updated me on the two saddles which I originally shot. The brown one with the barbed-wire stamping was sold, and then the buyer promptly sold it over the Internet! They seemed tickled by the idea. She explained that she get quilt patterns sent to her from Pennsylvania, she does the stitchwork and back goes the finished product.

All in all, an interesting venture!

I love the idea of bartering, Susan. I think the world in general would be a better place if we had a bit more of that "old school" method of doing business. Sounds like an excellent venture indeed!
04/28/2010 05:30:05 PM · #419
Thanks Deb, I am a huge fan of bartering. And I think the Amish appreciated seeing someone with a real camera, who was NOT trying to take their pictures. I warned when I was firing the flash, too, as I had to in order to get the details esp on the black saddle. Their 3-yr-old daughter was goggle-eyed by the lightning indoors! But no screaming/crying at all, from her or her much younger brother.

Here are the shots then I better rush Miss Lily outside, she says she wants some salad. Oh yes and I must have about 60 critiques to write, I am miles behind...

I have a tradition of entering shots that I like in free study and not caring about the score.

I got the "entering" part right, but I'm not doing so well on the second part. *sniff*, *sniff*, *sob*!

I made the mistake of entering a FS shot that I thought would appeal to the DPC crowd.

Big mistake. Not saying my other shot would have done better but at least it would have been my style and would at least have that going for me.
