To get your free Topaz Detail (or any other Topaz product), you go to this page, then click to download any of them you want to try. Next, fill out your email in the provided space and click "submit". You will shortly receive a product key that will unlock your downloads for 30 days.
Now open the zipped downloads and install them (they go to the right place automatically) and open photoshop and use them; the first time you use the product it will prompt you for your license key, which you can paste in, and you are good to go for 30 days.

When you are ready to purchase any Topaz products, Google "Topaz coupon" or "Topaz discount" and you might find a recent coupon code floating around. I did and I got the bundle at 20% off. I can't remember where I found the coupon code but it started with the search. |

Lighten up? I searched the forum for her, found her answer and you're telling me to lighten up?

You can also get a fully functionng trial of Nik Silver efex pro which will work great for this challenge. I think it's only 15 days... after using it for that period of time, I was convinced to lay out the big $$. |

So, if we can use Topaz... we can use "Fake HDR" plugin in Gimp.
So we can use layers ?
(no need for answers ...) |

Jac, without the benefit of tone of voice your reply sounded sarcastic. I believed it to be harsh towards a newbie. Apparently I was wrong and I apologize. |

Just be careful of the features you use for this challenge. Some of them are selective in nature and can result in a DQ. |

Silver Efex Pro's U-Point technology selects portions of an image for adjustment. I just assumed it would not be legal to use in Basic Editing. Can anyone clarify the legality of U-Point technology in Basic?

The last two times that I posted about legalities I was wrong and corrected by my team captain. Sooooo.....
I think that I am right in saying that Silver Efex is legal to use in basic editing as long as you don't utilize the U-Point part of the program. It will have a lot of use in converting to B&W even without the control points.
Nikon Capture NX also uses control points. I converted my entry with Capture NX2 without using the control points and I'm certain that I stayed within the basic editing rules.
edit to add and clarify: Use the program on the image globally (no selections with or without control points) and you will be staying within the basic editing rules.

I think it's probably worth noting that Nik Silver Efex includes the ability to make non-basic legal changes in addition to the control points, namely adding a vignette and burning edges. Keep an eye on the presets you use and make sure neither of those are included! |

And with Silver Efex, make sure adjustments are not made on a separate layer (I think that's not allowed in basic). Default setting creates a new layer, but it can be turned off. |

Separate layers can't be used in basic?? I'm pretty sure that's not true. However, I do know that layers must be in normal mode.... correct?
Regarding Nik, are U-points & control points the same thing? I assumed that was not allowed, and it makes sense you can't use vignettes, burned edges, etc. |

That's why I said I think it's not allowed. But I thought only adjustment layers are allowed in basic and those adjustment layers can only be applied in normal mode. |

Yep, from the current basic rules.

Ooops! I forgot about the "normal mode" rule for layers. Darn! Time to re-edit. |

Wow, I've been editing wrong all year then (it's my 1 year anniversary this week!).
I always do my edits on separate layers. If I do a shadows/highlights adjustment, or USM or noise reduction (or something like that without it's own adjustment layer), I like to do each on a separate layer so I can reduce opacity, if I need to.
Thanks guys, I guess I was just lucky all year. |
