You need to get 7-10 people to accept your invitation. I'm pretty sure everything after that is optional: choose a team name, slap together a logo, encourage participation, and go down with the ship. :-) |

Obviously, the captain creates the team and then recruits compatible team members who will participate. Select a team name and logo. Communicate timetables, expectations, goals, perspective and deadlines. Offer encouragement and status updates. In the preseason, it's usually best to use the private message system to communicate with your teammates. That's the best way to be assured your messages are received by all in a timely manner. And, this allows members to reply to the group private message with questions or comments. This kind of communication helps team members feel they are integral parts of the team.
Probably the most important role for the team captain is to take a leadership role in the team's private forum, which will open up next Monday, April 12. First of all, it's important to direct your team members to the right place. (I do not recommend using an offsite chatroom, like Google Wave or PhotoBucket or the like, as those will not work as well, nor be as "legal" & confidential, as the private thread provided by DPChallenge.) The DPL2 private forum for your team is THE place to exchange constructive criticism and suggestions for improvement. The captain may need to help members discover how to upload images to their "Workshop" and then teach 'em how to post thumbnails in the forum. Some learning curve there for many. Everyone is required to post-process their own images, but sharing ideas and helping to choose amongst several submission candidates will be, by itself, the most valuable educational aspect of the entire DPL2 experience. The team captain should take a lead role in facilitating this intra-team exchange, usually by setting an example, rather than by issuing commands.
With ten members on your team, there is the maximum and ideal potential of 20 image submissions per week. (2 per member) If only the top four scores from four different individuals comprise the team score (for each round), then not everyone will need to participate each week, as life sometimes intervenes precluding the DPL2 priority. That said, there will be some weeks when there will be a paucity of submissions from your team, for whatever reason. At those times, the team captain will need to apply gentle and diplomatic persuasion to make sure "enough" team submissions are made. In case you don't know, teammates are not allowed to vote on each others' challenge entries. That's the counterbalance cost of being allowed the group collaboration benefit. Each team can review the team's "submission page", which is very helpful to the captain. And, it's a lot of fun to track the scores of teammates during the voting time period.
I've found the job of Captain to be rewarding and challenging. It's worth the effort.

Our captain transit has a masseuse/monsieur come to our house at the start of each challenge, unlimited supply of chocolate covered espresso beans and spreads rose petals around our computers. |

You guys are all talking about what's "going to be". Hasn't your captain already been wining and dining you? Bear's already fed us lobster with our first pep talk. And our invitations came with roses and godiva chocolates Man, you all have lame captains!

Pssst.... Wendy? That was smoked salmon, not lobster. We bears are not noted for our lobstering expertise, but we are masters of the art of brailing salmon from cold-rushing streams :-)

We don't speak of the recruiting process - investigations and potential sanctions make us nervous. |
