read an article on the nikon d2h camera the other day, and was interested to see that they incorporated wifi connectivity into it.

so you can snap a shot, and have it instantly sent to a nearby laptop, which in turn can send it over the net to anyone you'd like. it will keep the CF card clean if you want, or you can batch send them as the card fills up. its also got 3 levels of security built in to prtect against theft in transit.

one other thing i noticed about it, is its only a 4MP slr - and curious as to why they kept the sensor so small for a fairly expensive camera.

pretty nice sounding camera overall - and the test photogs had nothing but praise to give it.

current issue of either photographic magazine, or pcphoto - cant remember.

Well it's not really a small sensor, it's a 1.5x crop, approx. 23x15mm. With only 4Mpx in this area, the pixels are quite large, meaning low noise. They keep the pixel count down to get the frame rate up (smaller files, faster processing).
You prolly won't tell much difference between the output of the D2H and a 6Mpx DSLR, the 22% difference in linear resolution at the sensor plane is partially compensated because the coarser array is less dependent on lens quality.
Now the interesting beast is the upcoming Canon 1D Mk II, with an 8 frame/s rate and 8 Mpx at 1.3x crop.

no WIFI in that 1D mkII- i dont believe.

i assumed the 4MP would produce nice pics - and you answered that question. they also didnt mention the price of the D2H in the article.

if i remember the d2h will do 8 fps

- Correct; although the WiFi in the D2H is an add-on, so nothing to keep Canon from doing same...

- D2H goes for about $3200, 1D Mk II is more, prolly $4500

- yep, they are both approx. 8 fps

the wifi is in the battery grip as I understand it. You also have to understand the target market - sports/ news photographers

You want high frame rate and you only have to do newspaper/ magazine size output - so a 4Mp sensor makes sense, both to let you have a large buffer, images you can transfer over wifi and big enough to publish.

good point - didnt think about that.

sounds like nikon put a pretty good amount of thought into the design of the d2h, and the testers were quite happpy with the way it handled/lay out.

i think the add on is $500 for wifi - would be pretty cool to be out in the yard streaming images back to the PC, or at the park streaming them to the car... at a wedding with no worries about memory or CF card failure - not just news and sports photogs could find it useful

i would consider it if it were available ( of course would probably wait a year or two most likely - hoping it would cost less )

Just worrying about whether the wireless connection is in range. :-) From my experience with 802.11 it's not particularly resistent to walls/etc..

supposedly up to 500' range and they have an extender attenna - but buildings are all different.

but you can hijak an unsecured wifi internet connection through walls...

Chuck Westfall from Canon USA says that WiFi for the 1D Mk2 will come at Photokina.

Like most of these things - what they say and what you get are rarely the same thing..

again - i would have to read reviews, but the idea if it works alright is enough to keep an ear out for it..

20 years ago a 750KB internet connection would have even the most internet savvy skeptical of its properties...

EIDT: i meant 20 years ago... ;}

Maybe 20 years ago... 10 years ago I was playing with multi megabit internet connections between Glasgow and London

alright, always so literal here - the point is clear enough.
