My wife and I were out on the Columbia River near Kalama Washington today and we found this big guy (girl?) basking in the sun. I tried to get some decent shots, but I didn't have a tripod with me and it was very difficult with the boat constantly moving, hands shaking, etc. We eventually got pretty close, but I was surprised that some of the best shots were actually the longer shots that I hand-held at 350mm. Anyway, just thought some of you might like to see them. Any comments will certainly be welcome.

Wow. Wish I had a 350. I can't believe those are hand-held! Great shots. I miss seeing sea lions all the time. I just moved back east from California. |

Sorry, I don't know the actual species. This one is in the Columbia River approximately 65 miles from the ocean. They seem to follow the smelt runs upriver every year. Last year the platform this one is on was covered with them, and there were lots more in the water. Unfortunately I didn't have a camera then. I should be able to get more photos, hopefully better ones, sometime soon.
