Hi everyone... does anybody have this kit with the two little nikon flashes? is it any good???

also, I have an SB-800 and an SB-900.... can I use those two flashed to command the two little macro ones? or do I need that SU-800 to get best results?

New here in Canada it costs about $625 with tax for the kit that does NOT come with the SU-800.... I have an opportunity to buy that same kit used in mint shape for $375...

is it worth it? has anybody had any experience using it? what about with an SB-800 or SB-900 as commander??

If it works great, I want it... if I can get the same results by just holding a flash with a TTL cord then, screw it... i'll just do that...

FYI, I have a Nikon 105mm VR macro lens and a Nikon 60mm macro lens

.

thanks, let me know asap as I don't want to miss out on a deal here... =)

Yep, I have it, it's pretty useful for Macros and also I sometimes use the flashes sitting on the desktop (they come with little stands which can also be tripod mounted).

You can trigger it from the flash built into your D90, and probably also from the speedlights though I'm not 100% sure about that.

It is quite expensive for 2 small speedlights. Since you already have two proper ones (your SB-800 & SB-900) that you can trigger using the D90's commander mode, you would really only get the extra benefit of the ring mount flash which like I said is good for doing Macro stuff.

I have found that ring mounted for Macros it can be good and bad, and can tend to leave strong reflections on certain objects. There have been a few occasions where I've started with the ring mount flashes and then ended up just giving up and using my SB-600 pointed at the roof. Mind you, that could be because last time I used them I was hopeless at lighting, or perhaps I'm just not doing it right :)

I'm at work just now, but I'll do some shots tonight on a variety of objects and let you see the results. I don't have any bugs lying around but is there anything in particular you want me to try it on?

I use an Orbis adapter with an SB900 and an SC-28 for that sort of thing. I can be difficult at times to keep things held and all though (keep in mind I don't use the mounting bracket, which BTW you can make for yourself at a fraction of the cost instead of buying from them. I also typically use extension tubes since I don't have a lens that focuses 1:1 so that admittedly makes things harder for me). Having said that, a lot of times I'll light it from camera right or left, which is SUPER easy with the Orbis. One thing that you do NOT get with the Orbis is the ability to control the ratio of light right/left.
I used an Orbis for and though.

ETA: I figured I'd post this because I was considering the RC1 as well, and decided to try the Orbis for the same needs instead.

Hey, thanks! I actually have a Rayman Ring flash adapter for my SB-800 as well, but I am looking for something with more control... which is why I'm looking for more feedback on the R1C1 setup...

Here's some sample shots, straight off the camera. The first one is of the entire kit you get in a nice black box.

I used TTL, no compensation. Camera was tripod mounted, manual focused and remote release.
