I was browsing old challenges, and look what I found under the "Stupid, Stupid" challenge... (a good one to revive perhaps?)
With the recent news about Dawn Brancheau's unfortunate end, I thought this photo was really quite interesting..
(no that's not Dawn, it's a different trainer and facility...) |

It is incredible that animals can be trained the way they are, but at the same token, they are still wild and can and will (at times) revert to their instincts. Even ordinary house pets can lose it. I am saddened by the loss of that trainer. I am also saddened by the animals in captivity for our entertainment. I will admit that I am not an animal rights activist or anything extreme, I just think about how sad it is from time to time.
RIP Dawn Brancheau

Thanks Cory. Few people understood the "stupid" part of this during the challenge.
Maybe it makes more sense now. |

Actually I hadn't even thought to read the comments before I posted it here...
Now after reading the comments, wow, there are definitely a few people who have a bit of egg on their faces now. |

I was just going to say... Did you read the comments? I love how many people were like, "What's so stupid about this???" I wonder if they would have found it stupid, if I had a photo of three kids throwing rocks at a tiger while in its enclosure at a San Diego zoo???

1.2 deaths per 100 million drivers
No I still think the whole trainer thing wins..
Let's see.. There are what? Maybe 100 trainers? How many days do they perform? Let's assume 365 (completely unfair assumption, but let's do it..)
So for every year, that's about 36500 Man Days... So for 100 million to be reached we get-
100,000,000 / 36500 = ~2739 years to reach 100,000,000 man days..
Taking this into account, we have it that there has been at least one fatality in the time SeaWorld has been open for about 50 years, so that's 136,986 Man Days for every fatality..
Therefore, we have it that this activity is roughly (100,000,000 / 136,986) 730 times more dangerous than driving on a Saturday..

According to this news piece times it by 3.
Petrified visitors who had stuck around after a noontime "Dine with Shamu" show watched the animal charge through the pool with the trainer in its jaws. Workers used nets as an alarm sounded, but it was too late. Dawn Brancheau had drowned. It marked the third time the animal had been involved in a human death. |

Yeah, but the other two weren't trainers. :) |
