LOL and still laughing................
Read a comment today from someone who was actually complaining that their comment wasn't marked as being helpful! Taking bets on whether the artist will mark the 2nd comment as helpful while leaving the first comment unchecked.
Here's my suggestion..... refrain from the caffiene :/ |

I personally find it disturbing when someone marks all comments helpful indiscriminately.
I found one comment I had 'made' which said one word: "Enter". Obviously I had accidentally removed the rest from the comment box without intending to make a comment. Yet someone had marked this useful. I wonder if the photographer who did so actually reads their comments.

I actually will click almost all remarks helpful. If they spent the time to remark to my photo, then I will click helpful. Even if its just "cool" or "needs work", I actually take it into consideration about how they feel about my photo. |

I also feel that any time spent commenting should be acknowledged.
I have started to 'checking' the helpful comment box myself, but mostly for an indicator that I have read or viewed the comment already (I am very forgetful, probably have alzheimers or something).

But I also have noticed when my comment is " wow, nice photo" is usually marked helpful in other hand " top of the photo is overexposed and distracting, branch covering the face is distracting, etc... "is never marked as helpful, so why bother commenting!?

And I will say this. I am never offended if someone does not find my remark helpful.
And people that that feel a remark should be more then a one or two word chiche, so dont check it helpful, thats cool too. I have seen some that click none, and that suits me fine too.
In other words its up to the individual, and no one should be upset one way or another. : ) |

Maybe nobody likes you. ;) (Just kidding.)
I certainly haven't noticed this as a rule. Most of the time, people mostly check all, or check none. A smaller group of folks seem to discriminate (in the good use of that word) in the selections, sometimes with no clear pattern I can figure out.
I used to spend time figuring out whether I thought a comment was really, truly helpful and marking accordingly, but after a while it just took too much thought - made my brain hurt. Unless someone says something truly useless or sarcastic, I'll check it.
It's been suggested before that there be two checkboxes, something that indicated something like "thanks, I read your comment", and another that actually indicated it was "helpful". More clarity, that's what this site needs... :) |

Why does it bother you for someone (like myself) to have a different standard of helpful. I have stated in these threads several times before, "nice shot." may not be helpful to you, but to me it says, "I did something that this person liked in some form or fashion. I may need to replicate it in the future." Likewise, "this sucks," would tell me that I did not relate well to that particular viewer and it can all go into a box for future reference.
I personally feel that people should not have to defend two things on this site. 1 -- How they vote and 2 -- What they feel is helpful. |

I find ALL comments helpful, and mark NONE of them. |

I do find it funny when you look at someone's entry and comments and note how they mark only positive feedback as helpful, whereas any comments suggesting problems or possible improvements are not marked!
But I don't think it's true to generalise that this is what most people do - I find many of my more critical comments, always politely phrased, get marked as helpful too.
And some just don't mark at all.
It's just a feature to be used if people want to - it's not mandatory to use it so I don't really worry about it. It's nice to know that a user found a comment I made helpful but it doesn't help me sleep better at night or anything!
:o)

Well I don't mark any helpful 'cos I forget until threads like this popup once a month - then I feel guilty and sometimes go back and do it.
However so many other people don't bother that I find it quite a pointless 'statistic'. |

I forget to mark them. Mind you, I sometimes forget I have a photo in a challenge too so ... alzheimers you say?

Maybe we should change it from 'Helpful' to 'Acknowledged' or 'Comment noted' ?
