Hey guys,

I just received this email from a 1x member:

"Giorgio, I love your photo of your grandma with the pumpkins. I can see why she is your favorite model. I am an oil painter, and I would love to have your permission to use your photo as a basis for my painting. Will you give me permission to do so??"

Any thoughts on what should I do. Of course it's a great honor for me, but what if the person wants to use the painting for commercial purposes?!

Thanks!
George

How fun!

The first thing I'd do is have him/her send you pictures of other work they've done, so you can see whether they're a Rembrandt or a Picasso. I'm not much of a Picasso fan, so I wouldn't like my grandmother's eye to be sliding down her face. However, other people would be just as unhappy with a Rembrandt styled grandmother.

Second, does it really matter if it's for commercial purposes? If you're happy with the final results, does it matter if it gets sold? Now if the person is making mass quantities of posters and selling them, that's one thing. But usually a painter makes one painting and sells it. Does that really hurt anything? I'd say go for it, if you like the their style, and make sure they send you a photograph of it when they're done.

I had the distinct pleasure of having an artist ask me if she could use my image as a subject for a painting.

I happily provided her with an image file and I love the warm, fuzzy feeling that I got.

I don't care of she sells it. She liked it enough that she spent many hours of attentive detail to reproduce the image.

I had the same experience a few years back with one of my carnival pictures - and it just made me feel proud that she felt my picture had made her want to make a painting of it. She sent me pictures of it when it was done and she had done a great job.

i am basically a painter and decided to do my own photography for paintings for this very reason that why someone will give me his image to paint.

Thanks for the input. Actually I'm more than happy that my photos are appreciated and reached another level. I'll keep you updated.

That's because they don't like staged boxing matches. ;\

Hey well, it made it a day and a half before it got blown out. That's improvement, right?

01/28/2010 06:15:00 PM · #1490

Two whole days before a rejection without any comments, reasons, or the usual email notification.

Another one bites the dust for me

My best of 2009 was just rejected as well, though it made it to member screening so that's something.

Not sure why I tried this one for any reason other than not wasting a slot. Looked terrible on a black background, too.

This one made it for a day and a half!! I'm getting better! LOL!!!

I'm at least over taking it personally......now I just have to figure out the process and what to offer up. I think I actually may have some possible stuff, but I'm still working on getting a feel for it.

I shot one last night that I think may work. Is there a thread going at all for potentials, and impressions, or just this wreckage thread?

ok, if my photo is listed as "in screening", is it actually in the screening process like I see when I click on "screening" -- or are the 1x uber people screening it to see whether to go to the next level?
02/09/2010 04:14:52 PM · #1497
I've lost one in screening - it has disappeared, not in any queue but my published number has gone up by 1.... Very strange!

Apparently it is a bug in the code that is currently being rewritten - still not sure if my latest actually got published though.

Generally (but probably not always) when it says "in screening" it means it has gone to where others are able to vote yay or nay on it. Usually (but probably not always) if the screeners deem it unfit to begin with, you get the reject notice within a couple of hours or so and it never makes it to that highly coveted and terribly teasing "in screening" status.

Some of us have decided that just making it to "in screening" is good enough, seeing as how we (OK, *I*) haven't had anything published for half a year.
