I don't agree with the statement about being dull, because yeah, everything is used over and over. But most pictures don't come as close to being as original as this picture was in the first place. Most don't stand out as much as these types do, and because it stands out so much, and it was so original, everytime I see a shot like this i like it even less. |
So where is the original ? Links pointing to DPC aren't right for a starting hint. |
I have no idea where the original is. Does it matter?
Wherever it is, it was original when it was taken. And now, after every copy, or slight alter of it, I like it less. |

Just pointing out that, like many of the people who voted highly on the smiling faces shot, you never saw the original either, but that the first time you saw it - it was original to you.

I'm honored that such a long thread was provoked by my picture. I was pretty sure people would have a lot to say about it. I'd just like to say:
First of all, it's Aleks and not Alexs (no big deal)
Second of all, last I checked I was a man. (no clue where the "she" comes from)
Thirdly, it's about time sunsets became a "technique", so that I could start a thread about how unoriginal and overused they are! |

In many/most languages names/nouns ending with an "a" are feminine. |

like in Polish (which I am) when a last name ends by "a", it's feminine unless the original name ended with an "a". Most names end with "ski" and then "ska" is for girls. However, labuda is the original so nothing changes.
I can assure you that I am a man though, heheheh.

I think that is why we have to vote with what WE think is original. If i haven't seen this technique before i will rate high... and the photograph will do well. We each just have to vote in how original it was to US.
I think that is a very fair voting element.
something that seemed original to many people was oneof the first (perhaps) water drops on class images (the flag by setzler).. however there were a few who had seen it in a magazine.. and voted low cause they didn't think it was original. To everyone else it was original (including me).
If something truely is an idea worked out by the photographer, we can never know for sure. We can't read all the books they read. The best we can do is say how original it is to US.

Nothing EVER done on this site is probably TOTALLY original. You don't think it has been done somewhere before , since the invention of the camera? The waterdrop shot was probably done the first year of the invention of the camera.
If you want original..go to YOUR folder first and list here, YOUR TOTALLY ORIGINAL photo. Thousand to One, a shot can be found on the internet that resembles it. Not to mention someone elses collections.
Let's see it! Or quit your bawling!
(Sorry...I am a little streesed out)
Not to pick on anyone, particular...but the Poinsetta leafs...been done over and over
Example page on DPCPrints (and I have 2 there)

yeah i agree
we are never going to get anything TOTALLY original. everything we think and feel is built upon prior things we have seen or felt.
however i think there is a difference between a direct copy of something.. and seeing something and reproducing it, in a way that speaks to, or interests us.. i think that is what art is, and how we learn and grow with eachother.

Since it's no one in particular but that in fact the poinsettia leaf
author is me I'll answer: I did'nt think that I was the first one in the whole world to take that subject. But for sure I did'nt use an "all ready to use an winner RECIPE" like water drops on a glass is. End of discussion for me. I'll continue to vote low on what I find repetitive, leave no comments, and everybody will be happy. |
