oh, i understand there is a price for handheld, that being camera shake, which affects overall focus - or at a minimum sharpness.
i'm not trying to argue the point that a tripod produces sharper i mages, just that decent results are possible -w/o one, and if you practice you can get a useable photos handheld.

my tripod is with me most of the time, as is the camera. many times there just isnt time to set up, and level a tripod to get a shot, and as a result i try to get as sharp as i can handheld much of the time.

i am looking at a monopod with a ball head - something i am lacking now - that may change my tune about the subject. the tripod i own doesnt have a ball head... if i like it on the monopod - i'll get a tripod that takes the same ball head.

what i have been doing here is 150 dpi - and i get decent results up to 10x15 - many 16x24. 20x30 is pushing it. yet most that are not studio type set ups are handheld. i'd be curious where you're selling unfinished prints for $500 - thats about what the local art gallery's photos are going for matted and framed, and they are shot with film- 8x12's

maybe i can mail you some PSD files - and you could give me your sharpness score for them ;}

again - this hi res digital stuff is fairly new to me - so any info i soak up is helpful - only had a decent digicam since october - had a 5 year break from photos altogether for cost reasons mainly.

on the other end of the spectrum what's your thoughts on 35mm enlargements - most over 8x12 arent worth doing in my mind - so if you can get the same shot off a 6mp to print at 10x15, or 16x24 as sharp as the 35mm 8x12 i'm content.

Never really shot any film so can't comment much about that - only been shooting for 2 years so far. I think I've shot two rolls in that time - one of these days...

Decent results certainly are possible hand-held. I think this has gotten off the original track but the issue is that there isn't an absolute number for what is 'sharp' its a personal evaluation to a certain extent and also is very related to reproduction size, reproduction means and subject matter (e.g., very contrasty or not, etc)

Hmmm...where are you able to sell them for that much? Sign me up. I'm doing an art show in April and am putting together some prints and was figuring about $30-40 for an unframed print. I guess value in art is determined by what people will pay, but damn...
