One of the photography classes I'm taking at school is supposed to teach me conceptual creativity, but the guy who is teaching it hates everything I've done for him in the last 5 months. I once even tried to emulate the work of the teacher's favorite student, but he still didn't like it. As such, I'm fighting internally about having to do these assignments at all and it's killing my creativity. He already stomped on my two idea proposals, so I was hoping you guys might be able to help me come up with something better.
I have to photograph a "captive world." Both "captive" and "world" have to be represented in the photo, but abstract-ish representations are usually better with this teacher. The final product should be something easy to "read" as a "captive world." We are allowed to use photoshop, but the main part of the image has to be photographic (and shot by us). Keep in mind that I am on a student's budget and my only mode of transportation is a bicycle.
Any brainstorming ideas you might have would be very helpful! Thanks! |

How about something representing your own captivity to the stifling effect of his rejection? |

"abstract" and "easy to read" are often at odds with each other. What were your previous ideas that he didn't like, and what were his reasons for rejecting them? |

Not abstract but zoos, animal sanctuaries, and ASPCA/dog shelters could all be "captive worlds." More abstract could be the US welfare system in which new generations of children are born into welfare families, fail in the education system and job markets, only to bear their own children full circle into welfare. |

Yes, I do. I've never visited before, so I don't know much more about it than that : )

By abstract, I didn't mean it in a "puzzle macro" kind of sense, but more in a "no globe, no bars,"-kind of literal sense. Maybe non-literal is a better way to describe it, but I didn't think of that word until just now!
My previous ideas were 1) animals in cages at the zoo, and 2) glazed-eyed people staring at a bright, glowing TV, playing off the idea of the "captive audience." He said that the animals at the zoo was too literal and that anyone looking at it would not read it as "captive world." He said that my second one was too subtle, that people might read it as a humorous Sony ad for the latest new flat screen, and that it could too easily be read as "willing world."
fldave and robs, those are some great ideas. They definitely got the wheels in my head turning. Another of my weaknesses with these assignments is that I have difficulty capturing such grand-scale ideas and entities in a clean, clear, and concise way, so that's another thing I have to work on. |
