Look hereand tell me if you can see any differences in these two shots...subject only...not the background.

List any differences you may see and list them here along with what photo is better and why.

I don't want to mention anything that I see in order to not add my bias.

You may even want to tell me "what I did different" in each. I'll post what this is about after a few members give it a shot.

Thanks,

Kenny

The one on the right looks slightly better.

Aside from very small differences in the pose of the model, the main difference I can see is in the light source. The image on the right has a more diffused light source, and might be positioned slightly higher?

Could be completely wrong...

ETA I like the one on the right better because the lighting looks softer and more natural, although I'd like the eyes to be lit up a bit better.

more contrast in the one on the right, deeper shadows in the mouth, brighter highlights, deeper darks in other areas.

More fill light on the first one. I get shadows some times when I bounce the flash some what like the second one. Lighting

Keep going...you're onto it. Ignore slight difference in pose of the model.

Thanks for your input!

Her face looks slightly longer and or thinner on the left photo, compared to the one on the right its the lighting and severe lack of sleep thats giving me that illusion. Other than that maybe the one on the left is a direct flash and the right one is a bounced flash?

Shadows in the one on the right let us see a bit more of the shape of her face. The first looks pretty flat to me. Seems more difused light on the second one.

her face appears thinner on the right one...more depth and shadowing on the right....

the smile is the first thing that stands out to me. The eyes on the right one look like they are closer together. The chin on the right one looks to be more defined. The one on the right also has a more elongated neck as well.

Maybe bounced the flash and added a reflector, the shadow under the chin is not as dark on the right one.

Chin is higher in image two which shortens her face. Light/shadow under her chin more diffuse in image 2. Overall colours in image one seem to have more red/yellow in them. More glare on her nose in image 2

Well, you still have the front flash, because of the reflection in her eyes, by somehow the shadow below her chin is not visible, so some kind of fill flash or softbox was used.
The chin size is just perspective, in my opinion.

Thanks for the input.

There was a "homemade" diffuser used (if you can even call it that) used on one of these. I just wanted to see the affect of some tissue paper would have if placed between the flash and the subject.

Flash (SB800) was bounced off celing in both.

The sample on the left had the "diffuser paper". I felt that this showed by the lessor contrast that some of you commented on.

Another thing that actually looks better on the diffused one is that the shadows are gone from around the eyes.

The strangest thing is the shadow under the chin. Why is it more pronounced in the shot with the diffuser? All other variables were the same except for the diffuser. Seems strange. I would have thought that the shadow cast would have been less...as with the eyes.

Thanks again,
