| If it's a photoshop problem then it could be that you don't have the lates camera raw update or something like that? |

Windows on it's own does not recognize the Canon RAW format. You need to install a codec to be able to view the canon RAW files as a thumbnail or preview. Canon does not make a 64 bit codec yet, at least I have not found one. I am using this 3rd party codec pack on Win7 x64.

My neighour, Brian, has the Canon 5D MkII and a 40D. He recently upgraded his PC and installed Windows 7 64bit. The other day we were tinkering with some snowy pics, shot in RAW, on Zoombrowser 6.4, anyway every time he tried to view the 5D pics, he got a message stating 'not a recognised format'. The 40D pics opened up find??
He has updated everything to latest version and still can't open 5D RAW, so he has just gone straight to PSCS4 to open them.
I definitely think there is a problem with latest Canon software and cameras that Canon need to address. There shouldn't be any compatibility problems with Zoombrowser as this is part of the software package.

Actually my D300s raw file don't show up as thumbnails either. I shoot raw/jpeg so it wasn't too hard but this codec look pretty handy. :)
ETA: Running windows 7

are you sure his zoom browser had the latest updates as over xmas I was playing with a 5DMKII and a 7D and after updating all my software I had no problems at all viewing RAW files and thumbs in Win7 64bit, vista 64bit and xp pro 64bit.

They removed it. (No great loss) You will have to download it from Microsoft if you want it, though I recommend taking the opportunity to try Mozilla Thunderbird instead. I've been using it for years now.

It was mentioned in every computer mag and tech site that I read leading up to the release of Win7. Not that I expect you read all the geek stuff that I do. Secrets like these are what keep tech people employed.

I've been using the same codec pack on my Win7 64 bit unit with no problems at all for Nikon raw files (NEF) and even the obscure raw files for my little P6000 (NRW). Unclear why the camera companies don't (or won't) release codecs when they release their cameras. The folks you link to demonstrate that it is not a matter of the task being impossible.
Although I could make a donation for the codec pack, I am actually considering paying for their commercial picture viewer software as an alternative (have trial version, does display pictures fast without the usual delays for thumbnails to build and allows instant magnification at two levels to check sharpness). |

Hi Juliet,
For PS you need to upgrade the Adobe Camera Raw from their site:
//www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4622
As for windows, a 3rd party viewer like Spiff said probably is the best way.
Don't give up just yet :)

I wish I was a lady when it came to techy things. But I fail, I am a sheep who will follow anything, anyone, anytime. That is why, I now have Mozilla Thunderbird thingy. Thank you for that Yo.
I am still battling the PS thingy, but I have a 20 year old helping me and payment is sushi. Who would have thought it could be so cheap!!! He has already stopped 12 of my neighbors using my unsecured network wireless thingy! |

when I upload pics to my pc, I view the raws through canon's own DPP.
Windows can't display RAW files due to the bit depth. Use something else. |
