Yayyy! I was about to give up on getting something worthy of this challenge, but yesterday, I found my 1 in 7 billion. I'm happy.

It was probably one of the worst weeks possible to shoot. Bitter, bitter cold and wind with hardly a person out that wasn't running for warmth. I've been rattling seconds after I leave the apartment...unbearable. My entry might not do very well here but it's getting cool reviews on the outside. I'm just glad I pulled something off and got it in. Good Luck all!

Last time I checked, a 6.2 was doing well. Not what you had hoped for it?
Starting to look pretty good over here.

Well, there are few nice images in the Challenge but most lack any in depth "storytelling" or rich character...which is what I'd hoped for when I suggested Challenge and wrote the description. My entry (I think?) is pretty strong in that department ...certainly could be better But a 6.2 is kinda, eh!
I was looking at The Paul Simon images and it seems like people took photo's and then searched for the nearest lyric or song title that matched and shoehorned the entry. IMO a lot of bad misses and as a heavy, heavy Paul Simon fan, a lot of shots don't hold a candle to what PS was driving at lyrically. Anyway...I was hoping for some deeper thought put into this one, on the part of the photographers and I'm not really seeing it in many cases. Oh well. (eta: I'm not entered in the PS Challenge) |
I am curious after the Paul Simon Challenge of what you thought of my entry ;)
There was a lot of thought and time to set that up. |

Be great if i can crack a 6 with this. I really enjoyed this challenge and i hope i've captured some of the story and emotion of my subject. It was a bit of a last minute entry as i didn't have anything yesterday but i decided to go out and find a stranger and i actually ended up interviewing my subject for 3 hours over a few drinks in a pub whilst i snapped away.. A very rewarding experience i found. |

Not sure if there is a story conveyed by mine or not. I do think it shows improvement in my people shots, however. I'd be interested in your feedback afterwards.

Well, these music themed challenges do tend to be freestudies. I did have an idea in mind of what I was going to enter, and I think I captured it well, but it may still come off to you as reverse engineered. Capturing a scene that conveys a story and has emotional impact is harder than it sounds. Perhaps easier if one has a studio and models available.

May not be great, but that's better than I thought I would do!
What is considered a great score around here? |

Correction, I guess I should say, I've entered one or two previously, but never really had a chance, or paid attention while the voting was going on. I'm still really new around here. |

I some how clawed my way out of the 4's... Still a depressing score, seeing how I would have put it at high 5's to a really low 6 |

I honestly dont think it matters when it comes to these. yes there are a folks out there who love to see the correct interpretation to the lyrics/title but most will vote up on how nice the photo is regardless on how well they interpreted the song.
So I do agree that those kind of challenges are basically free studies. :(

There's one of the things that I think is responsible for wild swings in opinion, and why even the high scorers always get some low votes and the low end shots still get some high ones. That idea being whether a photograph needs meaning or if creating simply an attractive image is enough. |

Depends on your skill level, but overall, something in the 5's is "with the pack", and over a 6 is a great entry with broad appeal. Because the score is the average of varying opinions, it compresses the actual range for most challenges to about half of the available voting scale. |
