The Paul Simon challenge description says "portray a lyric, song title, or album title..." Lyrics can be taken out of context to mean something completely different (the description doesn't say "portray the meaning of a PS song through an image titled with his lyrics"), and that's okay to me, because to many people, portraying the lyric is just portraying a bunch of words. A lyric does have a purpose though, so I can see why you'd be disappointed.

But when you say "portray a song/album title," then you're really taking context out of the question - if it said "portray a song or album, and title your image accordingly," I'd agree with you, but it doesn't. It says to portray the title, which is really just a bunch of words. You're being asked to portray a set of words, so you portray them however you want. Although I could partially agree with you on the lyrics, I can't really agree with you on the title.

JaimeVinas said, they're really kind of free studies. If it were a better-known, modern artist (say, Britney Spears), more users would start with a song or lyric in mind and work from there. However, I and many others on the site had never heard of him, or at the very least didn't remember his lyrics/songs/albums off the top of our heads... so when we saw the huge number of songs, we just shot whatever we wanted, figuring we'd find something to use as an image title. I ended up not having time to shoot, as my 4+ month stay overseas is winding down and I'm getting kind of busy visiting, packing, etc.

This challenge is a lot more specific. You're forced to submit a portrait, and you're forced to make it meaningful (artistic). Regarding your score (6.2 I think), I know how you feel. When you put a lot of effort into an image, trying to get the true meaning of the challenge, you're disappointed when you see a challenge filled with shoehorns or meaningless images but your image (technically perfect, with a lot of effort put in, and in which you KNOW you captured that special moment) isn't being scored as highly as you wished, it's a bummer. However, this score thread is filled with high 5s, so your 6.2 is above average... for this thread, at least.

Really? Damn, I new my X-gen was moving on in the world but I didn't realize we were getting old. ;) I think many of us grew up with our parents grooving to the whole 60s/70s scene even in the late 70s. I hope you know one of our generation's Paul Simon, i.e. Cobain, Vedder, etc. ;)
