Greetings...

When you are making forum posts that have nothing to do with photography or other specific elements of the photography hobby, please use the RANT forum for these posts. This should also probably include news/jokes/humor photos that already circulate through email.

As someone who does not "subscribe" to the Rant forum, I THANK YOU for this post!
02/12/2004 06:32:01 PM · #3
Not to be contrary, but I thought that's what General Discussion was for: "No other place for it? Try here!" Whereas Rant was for, well, ranting: "Sometimes it's good to vent."

I do agree that lately some topics have been showing up in various different forums where they don't really belong....

(Oh, and like Lind, I don't regularly check the Rant forum. So it would be kind of disappointing if all non-photography posts were relegated there.)

OK, I just read the sort of related post by Tony (bamaster) and I'm confused. Am I missing something? Is there a move on to limit the forums?
02/12/2004 06:37:53 PM · #6
I actually think the headings are misleading. 'General Discussion' denotes miscellany, (there is already a non-specific 'Photography Discussion' header) and Rant seems to suggest moaning or anger.

Sometimes people have non-confrontational points to make about things other than photography and it seems inappropriate to put them under 'Rant'.

To those confused. This is a photography site, not a MADD or donation site for someone that has had to endure what was posted. The way I see it, everything else means photography conversation that doesn't apply to the other forums, since this is a photography site. As much as I empathize, I come here for photography.

seems like we have two threads on the same topic?

huh?

OK, now having seen the "offending" post...

I still don't agree. This is a community. There are 12 forums dedicated to aspects of photography - from very general to specific. There are two or maybe three (if you include the members forum, which I've never really understood and has no description regarding content) that cover "everything else in the world". Oh, and the Rant forum is probably 50% or more dedicated to photography itself. So why remove or change the meaning and purpose of the General Discussion forum? This is an over-reaction to a specific incident.

I think John's topic says it best, please be considerate, ie. when posting tasteless blurbs such as the Epilepsy Test. Did anyone stop to consider other members/users of this site may be affected by this affliction? Please think first. I once had higher regard for some of the people that posted in this thread.
02/12/2004 07:02:18 PM · #13
Did these threads (still haven't even looked at the epilepsy one) start somewhere other than the rant forum? This whole line of discussion is confusing, at least to me, since that's where the are now...
02/12/2004 08:50:25 PM · #14
They are there now because they have been moved.
We are merely asking people be considerate that most people prefer to come here for photography. There is an entire world wide web of sites for other things. Yes, we are a community. So? No one is banning the topics, just asking they be put in a forum that can be turned off in one's preferences is all.
Thank you.

This just really sucks. The Nazi attitude really reflects poorly on the leadership of this site. General Discussion is labeled as a non-photography forum. Why are people being punished for using it in the manner it's labeled?
02/12/2004 09:04:57 PM · #16
Why are you punishing people who don't want to see off-topic threads by forcing them to see them?

Life sucks, then you die.

Because we are nazis and we can :)

Serously... 'general discussion' really shoudl be photography related discussion that doesn't fit in another forum.

It's OK, I think Scott just misplaced his crack pipe and is in a little distress. Go into the light Scott...

I think there needs to be some consolidation of the current forums and we are taking a look at that. General discussion and Rant should really be merged into a forum that can be hidden.

Get over it....

I always thought that the general discussion board was to discuss pictures taken by //www.dpchallenge.com/profile.php?USER_ID=1031

Who's been punished here? I don't recall reading anything about a punishing or a suspension, etc. From what I'm reading - it's a simple plea to keep the forums photography related since that's what we come here for.

OK, Nazi was a bit over the top. However, there has not been, to my knowledge, a requirement that General Discussion be photography related. It's under the "Other" category, separate from the "Photography" category, which implicitly, if not specifically, segregates it from needing to be photography related. Now, all of a sudden, because of a couple of whiners (I won't mention any names deafwolf), it's suddenly a new, heavy-handed policy. Doesn't seem to be in the spirit of this site, which usually takes a more measured approach to these kind of changes.

Someone got punished? If there was a spanking someone better have gotten photos of it!

Actually, we've been discussing it for quite some time, certainly long before any recent posts, and a number of the SC members want to get rid of extraneous postings altogether. I'm sure it won't kill people to post in one forum rather than another, now will it?
