Double Rejected
12/26/2009 08:24:33 AM · #1406
So how does one find out why the images get rejected? The last two they blew out so fast that it made my head spin, and *zero* information.

This site is debilitatingly picky, huh?

I know I'm no great shakes, but they sure blow 'em out quickly....

I think this has been discussed here before but basically there are two steps to screening at 1x - first the "screeners" (specific individuals charged with that duty) decide whether the shot should go to member screening. If no, you'll get rejected pretty quickly and there will be no explanation. If they decide to put it forth to member screening, it can be there for 24 hours to several days. Once either accepted or rejected, you can go to your submitted photos, click on the photo, and see the comments if any that were left by members who screened your photo. If no one left comments, you won't see any.

If you don't know what member screening is, spend a bit more time at the site. :-)

So basically, the site isn't particularly user friendly, and they pretty much will select only what they think to be stellar without so much as an explanation if you're looking to figure out why they rejected it?

That certainly makes it difficult to work with.

I'm prolly not 1x material anyway, I just thought I'd give it a try.

Seems like a pretty demoralizing system.

Well...the rejections can get frustrating. You need a thick skin and a strong ego to accept rejection! I've been trying to get some of my abstract macros accepted with no success so far. I have close to a couple dozen, or more, rejections (not all macros!) since I started submitting on a regular basis this fall.

It's a fantastic site if you take advantage of the critique section. You must provide critiques to earn a critique. So occasionally I'll post a reject for critique, in this way you gain more insight in to why it may have been rejected and what may be polished to have it accepted. The portrait I have published was initially rejected, after recieving several excellent critiques I had a few small changes and then I resubmitted the image for screening.

The screening process is a good opportunity to see a lot of high quality photography. Many of them don't get published so I like to participate in member screening just to see the work, although I have not voted much in the last 2 weeks or so.

It is extremely demoralizing, even to those who "succeed" there. :-)

The way you figure out what they're looking for is to look through what they publish. The site is fairly user-friendly if you take the time to look around and get a feel for it; read the info provided. They do have forums you can ask questions, too. And unless you are a 1x God (there are a few), your reject percentage will be significantly higher than your published percentage.

Well you could always be more selective. I'm 9 for 16 so far but would be 9 for 10 if I would just quit submitting non-muted color photos. I doubt it though as I do like the challenge.

Btw, there is an easier way to maintain a high publish rate and that is to simply keep submitting the same stuff over and over. That's what many of the 1x Gods seem to do. There are exceptions of course. Some do attempt to explore their subjects in greater depth but too often they seem content to being XEROX machines, not unlike here.

I've taken time to submit fifteen or so images to that website and they never give me any reason, critique, or feedback at all! Not a single accepted photo form them. !!!!

My latest rejects:

It is, without doubt, getting harder and harder to get published on 1x (but that makes it even more challenging)

Oh heh... that's not mine, it's actually lucianc's.... I was just pointing out that a ribbon winner here is now at 1x.com. But I will shamelessly plug my own submissions, now that you mention it. ;-)

I have a problem with that.

I am on no level qualified to critique photography, especially at the level of quality that the images on 1x are.

So where do I go from here if I want to expand my horizons?

One of Deb's initial goals for 1x was 40 rejections in 2009!

I was laid to rest 28 times in 2009!

I still think you should participate in the critique threads. In my opinion, we are all qualified to critique a photograph. Even a critique that reflects what you see, feel, and get from a photograph provides useful insight to the requesting photographer. It's a wonderful exercise that, in your words, should expand your horizons! You will build your personal knowledge on what makes a good photograph from your perspective, and that will soon be reflected in your own work. Go critique on three images, start with this one! ;)

I tried to login but got this message: "This feature requires you to login with an account that has required access." What does this mean? Was I so bad that I have to now be reviewed on login? lol

I got rejected too on 1x.com with 2 photos (one of them i really like it while the second one would be rather part of a series). My last submission which got accepted was rather a 'test' in order to get the feeling of the 'style' they encourage.
Anyway, i don't feel bad at all getting rejected there.

Thanks Louis for pointing out to my photo! :)

The freshest reject, and one of my personal favs:

Some of the voters' comments:

"this is more like a conceptual photo"
"i think it is too heavy edit"

It's a Lensbaby shot, which is not very 1X friendly tool, plus it was literally basic editing, mostly colour saturation.

any thoughts?
