I think that is going to be a personal choice on the part of each voter and it will vary. Looking at the camera may imply a posed shot to some people. In many cases it may just be chance, or they noticed you right when you snapped the shutter.

For me, if it does not appear to be an obviously posed shot, it flies.

...and there is also this candid style challenge: Singled Out

In the challenge that I posted, above, the description specified "candid". The blue ribbon winner was extremely popular with voters and other admirers despite the fact that the subject was looking directly at the camera.

There was a thread started that debated how candid that shot really was, but the fact remains that it won first place.

Sort of a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. On the one hand, you want to see faces. On the other hand, there is the risk that the subject will see you and realize that you're taking their picture. Even tougher right now if you're trying to get people coming and going from stores/malls as everyone is so bundled up.

I lucked in in the last Candid challenge. First, I was stuck at the airport delayed for 3 hrs, so once in the holding area I pulled out the camera and just panned around looking for shots, from where I was seated. My subject was sitting in a chair, with his wife on the end of the sofa, and at first did notice me, but I just panned away and shot some of the gawdawful *art* on the wall behind him. When his wife got up and walked around, I saw him looking for her, so I began to shoot, and got this:

FWIW...so far I have managed one true Candid entry for this challenge, that is the subject(s) had no idea I was even there. I got a few others, but in thoses cases the subects knew I had the camera out.
