Might as well just run it over at Flickr or someplace then since you can't host images here without that pesky $5 a month thing.....

I don't usually pitch into this type of discussion, but why not do it once? Based on the OP's comments in the thread that got locked, he seems to think that members somehow know how to edit better than registered users. Of course, most of us know that's just a nonsensical idea, but we do have the advantage of being able to utilise a more advanced ruleset if we choose to. Of course, most of us know that many of the entries in the member challenges are also done using basic editing, but the OP seems to think otherwise.
So, do the registered user challenge as the OP suggests, swap the rules around so members can only comment and show the OP once and for all that the ability of photographers has nothing to do with membership levels or editing skills. Heck, Joey Lawrence is a registered user these days, maybe he'll enter something and kick everyone's butt.
Similarly, with the OPs repetitive requests for out of the camera challenges. Let's have one. Again, all it will do is highlight the fact that people who can compose well, light well and have a vision for what makes a good image will win.
Edited for clarity.

It's been shown time and time again that for the most part, the "purists" that squawk the loudest about advanced editing, and Photoshop in general don't understand that it's just a tool, and subject to the vagaries of the user.
The squawkers also don't generally seem to know how to use it that well, either.......I think it's generally a frustration thing.
I have also noticed that over time, some of the noisiest detractors of PS learn a thing or two and become comfortable with their particular style of post-processing......and become one of the droids like the rest of us! LOL!!!
I certainly would be quite content to do this one time.......I'd look and comment. It'd be fun to comment on images purely on the composition, exposure, and lighting.
It'd be *real* photography! LOL!!!

I must admit I cannot reconcile the connection between a membership and editing skills.
I do know that the reason I'm a member is because I want to support this site that I've taken so much from in the way of skills, knowledge, and friendship.
$25 a year is a pittance for that in exchange.

Never a bad exercise.
Actually, with the new size allowance, straight out of the camera with no crop would be cool!

If you are interested in my opinions as a registered user, you can find here what I wrote while this thread was closed.
As for a free study challenge reserved to registered users, I don't think it makes any sense ask people to pay for membership and then not allow them to anything on the website. It more reasonably should be open to anyone, even if I probably would not be interested in submitting as I prefer to try and get a creative idea from an established starting point... you can't imagine how many wonderful ideas I had from challenge titles -that I was never able to shoot :(
Having an empty page in front of me would not be very stimulating. Just my preference.
As a side thought, I think it could be funny to have an open challenge where people with an average below (put here appropriate number) would have the expert editing rules and people with an average above that number would have the minimal editing rules. I think this kind of challenge could teach a lot to many of us. I bet one of the "minimal" would get the blue :) |

OOOOOOOHHOHOHHOHO i just had a great idea, how about a pair of challenges one week called before and after where you enter your image direct from camera and then enter the processed version in the other challenge. Then we can see how much of a difference processing makes in the quality of the images. Huh huh what do you think?? *crickets chirping*

With the OP's original premise that this site isn't worth paying for, and this topic revived with discussion "on-the-edge" of the forum rules, I don't see a real purpose of keeping this thread alive. Locking it now.
