I did enter this image into the challenge knowing that it was not 47 steps from my door, or any door. I didn't do it to annoy anybody and I didn't think the shot had a chance of doing as well as it did. I have seen many shots in challenges that don't adhere to the challenge description and nobody seemes to mind. You may find it hard to believe but I would prefer challenges where we were not able to shoehorn like this. It is not feasable to do that as you would need to restrict the topics so much as to almost kill DPC.
My comments in the image were not intended to rub people̢۪s noses in anything, simply a tounge-in-cheek acknowledgement that following the challenge description to the letter is not a requirement. I apologise if the tone of the comment caused offence.
I approach DPC as a fun site and didn't intend to be the "bad boy" in this instance. I understand the sentiments behind many of your comments, although I am surprised to be called some of the names I have been.
I find it ironic that if I had left the photo comments blank there probably would not be an issue. If I had said in the comments "we were camping near the beach this weekend so had this view on our doorstep" there would be no issue. Telling the truth has been the trigger for all this "discussion".

Thanks for the explanation. I do not have to agree but I certainly understand and can cut a little slack and have a bit more faith in your (online) character. |

My time at this site is a constant learning curve in so many things, not just photography. I distinctly remember the first time a light went on....it was when I chuckled after seeing Roberts famous 'self-portrait' entry and then later reading his explanation....it sorta just made sense.
Another time was during the '2 second' challenge and like most ppl here I got upset at the 'cheating'. But when it was pointed out that he didn't break any rules I eventually learned 2 important lessons.
1. it is all about perception
2. don't take this stuff so seriously
So I guess my entry was 'cheating' as well. I wasn't at home I was in another country and had to cross a busy road to get the shot and couldn't count the exact steps. I guess I didn't take the whole thing too seriously because IMHO if you have a description that restrictive you are either going to get exactly this situation OR you are going to exclude a lot of ppl. So far 'exclusion' has not been what this site is about. |

Yes, after which people were outraged enough that the next two challenges of that type DID contain "special rules" to enforce the "guidelines":
Originally posted by Challenge History:
1-Second Exposure
A Member Challenge using the Advanced Editing rules.
Description
Take a photograph using a shutter speed of exactly 1 seconds.
Extra Rules
This time, your entry will be disqualified if you do not use shutter speed of 1 second.
============================
30 Seconds or More
An Exclusive Open Challenge using the Basic Editing IV rules.
Description
Make an image that uses an exposure time of 30 seconds or longer. EXIF data will be used to validate exposure times.
Extra Rules
Let's try this again.. not meeting the challenge is grounds for DQ; your EXIF data MUST show an exposure of 30 seconds or more. |

Calling names isn't cool, but I'm sure Nuzzer expected a little backlash. :) After seeing nuzzer's pic come up in voting, I spent the whole week being jealous of the lucky person who lived so close to the ocean he could step outside and pee in it. Now I feel a little better! :)

Sorry. The voters are partly to blame for this one. This wasn't an exercise in how well one can follow a map, or finding the optimum trail to the most awe-inspiring scene. It was an exercise in photographing subject matter so familiar that you would typically ignore it.
If you have that scene out your back door, point the camera to the ground and photograph a weed. The voters should have been looking for mundane subject matter made extraordinary.

You hated me? lol you don't even know me. That 2 second challenge 3 years ago is probably the worst decision I've made in 21 years so really how bad can I be?
Yes it was wrong, but is it that hard for people to realize that it is one of those stupid LITTLE mistakes people make in their life. I LEARNED from it and that's what matters. Oh and BTW having been insulted for a few days in threads, my image, and private e-mails I know how Nuzzer probably feels and still think its completely uncalled for. I was shocked at how mean some people could be, and apparently still are.

Now, I haven't checked to see how many, if any, other entries are equally flagrant, but this attitude sort of ticks me off big-time. A whole lot of us entered into the spirit of the challenge and attempted to glorify the mundane.
How about you?

This goes as well for me. Thank you for stepping up Nuzzer. I hope (unfortunately, it's a fool's hope), that people think twice about doing such things in the future. Is it so hard, if you can't meet a very specific challenge, to just opt out of it? |

I can live with that. Thanks! Makes me feel better about it and you. Shoehorns are understandable, you use them to force something to fit. But I do think there's a line. I appreciate the explanation/thoughts. |

Take your pitchforks and torches over to the Rainbow challenge and start DMNC-ing people for not having every color in the color spectrum...
Thirty minutes of reading this post has revealed two things to me.
1) People are always going to be upset when they have been duped and then have it rubbed in their faces.
2) Duping people at DPC and rubbing it their faces is excellent bait for those who are giving low votes for something they consider DMNC...
Now let's get those Rainbow entries!! |
