This website already suffers a little too much from a 'helpful' mentality above all costs, and various little love-ins that coddle people too much. Things like this need a little bad vibe, it's imperative IMO. Even if it's just to say "no, we're not going to sit back and smile and be pansies".

It's great to focus some attention on the good work done elsewhere in the challenge AS WELL, but not instead of.

OMG. I just read through some of his comments. I am *shocked* at some of the things some of you all are saying. Of course, your comments say as much about you as you feel his approach to this challenge say about him.

Haha, even I was a little shocked by how harsh this usually overly nice commnuity was laying on him, but it does display a certain amount of outrage and makes it even more obvious that what he did was messed up. I think if he never said anything, people would know, and be bummed, but then saying what he said, essentially rubbing it in that he cheateddidn't follow the challenge description...thats the part thats making people cranky.

But honestly, what do people expect. With the voting styles that have essentially embrace DNMC images, there really is no reason to expect people to follow the challenge description. While this case was a little more wool over the eyes, I've seen plenty of shoehorns and dnmc score high marks. That just shows that its more the deception that is angering people, not so much the DNMC.

some of the comments are kind of harsh, but at the same time, had the photo been titled something like ' This is Nowhere Near my House ' would it have received the score it did - entered in the challenge it was entered in ?

i doubt it, and can understand people being upset.

i've been around here a long time, and the last time i remember something like this coming up resulted in the major bashing of a teenager. my guess is he learned his lesson...

if it just gets laughed off 'haha' you got me - what good does it do the site as a whole ?

Okay...so I haven't read the thread fully....but I will put my hand up and say that my image isn't 47 steps from my house. Anyone who knows me should have twigged onto that. How could I have been at my house when I was in New Zealand...so technically my image is not within the rules either.

OOPS!

Really? Go look at some recent brown ribbons and the bottom 10%. I just looked at one that had 63 votes over a 5, yet all the comments say something like "I don't get it, I dont know what im looking at, DNMC, Not seeing it, etc"

All of that and only 12 "1" votes, and still another 60+ in 2-4.

I think 47 steps from your Dad's beach house fits the challenge ok Judi.

I reckon most who say "I don't get it" simply aren't looking.

And yet they finished LAST (or nearly so) -- hardly support for the idea that they get voted unfairly high. No one says a good OOB (or even "shoehorned") photo has to get a "1" vote. Just because you don't see the relationship of the the photo to the challenge topic doesn't mean there isn't one.

was it 47 steps from the door of a building you were staying in at the time? i don't think this is quite the same thing :)

that said, i'm totally not interested in being upset about this anymore. he took the shot, took the piss and now, he's taking a lot of s***. i'd say that's enough.

I don't even know what to say, although having seen your typical personality on here, it kind of doesn't surprise me in the slightest.

Why bother? Honestly?

Disappointment continues to abound here. Why even have challenges?

*EDIT* Man, I need to finish reading threads. If this was taken 47 steps from whatever house/home you were staying in at the time, then that's a little more within the spirit, right?

Still, ties in with what I have to say about your personality. Troublemaker.

Technically he wasnt cheating.

Morally he was.

I think the thumbing of his nose in his comments leave a wee bit to be desired.

It says a lot about a mans character.

Thats all really.

Yea, i agree. It seemed a strange thing for the guy to do in the first place, and was pretty inconsiderate to others i guess, but it's really not something to get too worked up about in my opinion. I think perhaps he is just lonely and needs a hug.

maybe he's trying to get on the top 10 list for most comments received on a single picture. is there even a ranking for that? :P

*i know i know, the challenge was before they instituted the top lists, it's just a joke guys!

C'mon, you gotta be kidding me man. An image that finishes in the bottom 10 images should not have 63 votes over 5, including a few 9-10 votes. The largeness of the voting scale, coupled with the ever popular jab "average vote cast" has made people vote in a fashion that is very "diplomatic". Hell, some people even admitted in anothe rthread that thier vote scale is 5-10. But it is what it is, and I guess if the majority is doing it, then it doesn't matter in any way, excepts lessen the impact of people who vote, in my opinion, more honestly.

Well lets not all get on nuzzer. Read through some of the other photographer comments in the challenge. He clearly isn't the only one who didn't stay true to the challenge. It use to annoy me but I've been here long enough to expect it by now. I've also learned that not everyone takes the challenges all that seriously and he didn't actually break any rules. Would it have been better had he tried to following the instructions? Sure. But I'd also love to see people actually present their own work instead of showing me ripped off ideas and then getting rewarded for their creativity. However, with the exception of a select few I don't expect that either.

Haha Yanko, that last part is one that bothers me a lot. You see it a lot on here, often with a link to the actual image they "ripped" off. While its perfectly fine to imitate someones effort in order to learn how its done, its a whole other thing to use that in a competition.

Okay...I find it interesting the different remarks that have come in over the last half hour. Some with humour....(I needed a good laugh) and others...well...your knickers are in such a twist that your voices have risen incredibly high. Can you all honestly tell me that you have abided by every minute rule/guideline in every challenge/competition you have ever entered? Nobody is an angel in this world. Now before you all get even higher voices...I am not abiding cheating....but this challenge was bound to get some people bending the rules....!!! I am sure that Nuzzer and I are definitely not the only ones, in fact I would even be bold enough to say that some of the commenters in this thread or on Nuzzers image that complained about the rule breaking, were probably rule breakers in this challenge also.

Does that make me a troublemaker???? Maybe!
But let's just say I am playing devils advocate here.

Sometimes people can't look in the mirror for fear of seeing their own guilt, so they make themselves feel better by throwing the flack at others!!!
