I'm thinking of getting one... any suggestions?
I would be using it for both macro and normal shots (like far away birds, zoo, ect...)
I was going to get a Nikon 180mm f/2.8 for portraits and birds/zoo shots... but then I found out that I can get the Tamron macro 180mm in the US for only $645.99 at adorama (in canada it's almost $1400.... stupid import taxes)
i'd like the tamron for macro, but only if it will be just as good as the nikon for non-macro work...
(I already have the Nikon 105mm VR macro lens, but this lens would be good for bugs as I wouldn't need to get as close to get 1:1)
thanks =) |

I like the tamron but given its focal lenth it's not ideal for reverse lens hook in case you wanted to get even smaller macros (ie not as much gained when compared to a smaller focal lenght). Other then that it's great. I love using it as a portrait lens (not full body).
ETA sorry, iPhone typing. :(

I have a couple of the Nikon 180 2.8's one manual ED Ai, and the other the IF ED AF version. They both work great for macro with an extension tube. I am guessing that bellows would be good with them as well, though I haven't tried it. The Ai version is in my ready bag all the time, and I use it often. I like the AF one too, but the older one is still my fav.
Here's a sample macro with the manual focus 180, with shooting info in the description.
