p.s. I've been having a lot of fun lately using a quirky interpretation of the challenge, taking a strange but personally meaningful photo, and then going for Brown. But that's just me. |

The thing that works best for me are the no-hassle side challenges where if life takes over and you miss four days, you don't feel guilty.
I also make myself try to comment on at least 2-5 images of others for every one I post.
I think it may be time for a primer for participating in, and setting up, side challenges.
It's been my experience that the originators of the challenges try to be very accomodating of people's schedules.
Yet I see apologies all the time from people who get tangled up with real life and feel bad about it.
I even know better, yet I still feel guilty when that happens and I'm in one.
Just my thoughts......8>)
I *do* love how many people I've gotten to know and love through the side challenges!

Hopefully you aren't suggesting I comment more, Jeb.... :-)
I'm also a bit dejected about the whole commenting thing of late. I've commented a couple hundred entries in the past three challenges I've voted and a good third or so of them are not marked helpful. I do realize some people don't check that box out of principle (ie never check it) but I think some just don't care, and that's depressing.
I'd forgotten about the B&W side challenge. I do have one or two for the street side challenge.
And my FS is something I shot entirely for myself. It climbed steadily to the dizzying heights of 5.3! I just don't know if it'll hold until rollover.... |

Isn't just you, it happened to me just as my membership expired about a month ago and I have not been inspired enough to re-up, I did enter the golf tourney but having trouble getting up to even enter enough challenges to fill out my card, I have already taken my 2 mulligans and just barely threw something together for this week. I am sure at some point I probably will return but until I get inspired again I am for the most part sitting it out. |

Don't worry about it. Look at my challenge history...just shoot what you want and don't bother with the challenges unless one really tickles your fancy. |

It's gonna be close on holding the 5.3, by the way - just checked at it is at a precarious 5.3085..... will have to wait until morning to see! |

You did something recently in that area where I followed your lead, and it really worked the few times I have done it now. I just commented on what I wanted to, and didn't force it, voted 100%, then posted after I had finished voting for anyone who wanted additional feedback. The handful of people that responded got very detailed feedback from me on their entries. No vote changing, of course. |

First, I say go shopping - that's always fun. Go to a chocolate store - even better!
Second, I say make a game of it.
For example: Shoot a picture that you KNOW meets the challenge but hide some odd object in the foreground. THEN make a prediction about how many times you think the word "distracting" will appear in the comments! wheee! :D
or - put in an artsy photo that does meet the challenge, and give an award to the most creative interpretative comment made during the challenge.
Or - I say this seriously - take a break from DPC for one week from challenges and see how you feel. Spend time at Flickr or 1x.com - just to try something else for a bit.
I'm not saying you should leave - because that would be a big loss here. But voting preferences lately are uber-crazy and I doubt things are going to get back to the way they were - say even a year ago.
Personally, next to this place, my fave place is Flickr. Have you joined any groups there? You will get lots of love and adoration from like-minded individuals. It's fun!
Good luck to you and I hope you get out of "hate" mode soon.

Maybe we all simply need a nice GTG, fill ourselves with booze and sing karaoke before getting laid in some sleezy hotelroom?

LOL!! Already did the shopping... big time. Liking the sleazy hotel idea...
And yes, //www.flickr.com/photos/debfort/ <--- that would be me on flickr. Joined an international pigeon group and found some wonderful photos there! Left some comments. Joined the Lumix LX3 group but haven't posted anything to the pool there yet. Will see what else I can find. |

Deb, I am not always demonstrative, but your comments have been a dpc bright spot for me recently, on my photos and on others. You say the most cogent things, and concisely, too. |

If I could only shoot as well as I see. I think perhaps I appreciate photographs far better than I take them. But I am pleased some of my comments are appreciated. I do enjoy the viewing part of this place quite a bit.

No.... my precious 5.3085 is now a 5.3037.
Must you people kick someone when they're already down? Must you?? |

Of course. You need to be sure they are going to stay down before you attempt to walk all over them. That's the DPC voters way. :P
BTW: If you make a new side challenge, I'll join. Pick something you love, that should get you interested and passionate.

Ooooh, mind if I borrow that as a wet weather alternative for the Auckland GTG? ;)
Deb, it's all smoke and mirrors. Not so much the original image as how you polish it up. |

Originally posted by Melethia: I could not, under the penalty of imminent death, set up a "set up" shot and shoot it for a score here. Perhaps I should force myself to learn to do that? |
I have no doubt that you could learn to setup shots and do it better than the so called setup pros. You have one thing they often lack and that is a pair of eyes. You use them to see the world around you. There's a sincerity in your work and that makes it authentic. I know when I look at your photographs it's like seeing through your eyes. Too often the setup pro just has his eye fixed squarely on the prize or too busy copying someone else that they lose sight of what makes a great photograph. These two photographs that won you a ribbon will be remembered far longer than 90% of the ribbon winning shots on this site and that is the biggest challenge of them all. I hope you know that.

Remember that other people, not just the photographer, will read your comments. Just because the photographer doesn't mark it as helpful doesn't mean it wasn't helpful to someone else. It has been mentioned before that there should be a universal checkbox for each photo where anybody can mark a photo as helpful or not. Maybe something like that would be beneficial for the site?

Do what I do...Shoot for yourself.
If I see a picture I think might be good. I'll see what challenges there are. If it doesn't fit...free study time. But then. I've only entered 3 challenges this year and before that it was a full 11 months to the previous challenge and before that almost 2 years.I'm in the current free study at about 5.4 right now, which is my highest score ever.
I'm here for the comradeship and the learning, which I've gotten both. Maybe you need to take a break. *shrug* |

I'm closing in on my 2nd year at DPC and photography in general...so I still feel as if I am floating in unknown waters (I guess if that feeling leaves entirely it wouldn't be fun anymore, huh?)... Anyway, Melethia 's comments have always been encouraging...mostly cause I feel she really looks before she types. I also really like looking at her pics...!

Thank you, Richard. I can say that I am very pleased with nearly all my challenge entries, even the ones that sub-4 on me. Just wish the site wasn't so focused on scores and averages and ribbons and such, but that IS what the site is for. Can't fault it for that!
By the way, I added a note to the shot of the little girl window shopping....
"Ah, a quick story to add to this after all this time. This was a challenge running the same week as Shadows, and in that challenge was a shot called "Ode to Deb", which I loved. I remarked as such. I received a PM from the shooter that I was indeed the Deb it was ode'd to (it has pigeons, you see!) so I was very eager to see the outcome of that challenge. Rollover here is at 6 am, so I got up, waited, and was delighted to see Mark ribboned with the shot!! I was a bit bemused to see the red ink on the left of my home page, because I'd recently renewed my account and thought that little red message had gone away. Then I realized they wanted the original of my shot from the other challenge. I couldn't figure why - I never edit much. So I dutifully went off, found the original, noted my editing steps, and sent it in. It wasn't until after that, that I noticed the shot had taken third. I'm a little slow sometimes. :-)
And here's Mark's ribbon winner:

Just do shoe-ins, This way you "will" get at least some comments. I'm on a seven year slump and this year is the worst. :) |
